Ever heard of this piece before?

PostFri Jul 07, 2017 3:17 am

I was perusing youtube and came across both this piece, composer and organ!! Lovely combination of baroque in an amazing acoustical church that sounds very crisp and clear.

I've not heard of this composer before.... is he popular for organ works?

And this organ is incredible! I'll have to search to see if it's HW available.

Balbastre is a well known French composer, organist and harpsichordist from the second half of the 18th century.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claude_Balbastre gives you more info.

An anecdote tells that he was able to avoid that his organ was demolished, as so many other instrument were during the French revolution, by playing the Marseillaise when the soldiers entered the church.

There are plenty of scores he composed available at IMSLP.

All the best.

After listening to this piece of music numerous times, it seems it's a bit doctored with both insertion of notes as well as perhaps some acoustic enhancement. Having said that, I still really enjoy this piece....

It is available from PROSPECTUM, it was a couple of years at least in the making but is now available.
It has what sounds like a couple of faulty attack, sustained note connections or else the acutal pipes overblow to different note after the attack (which I inquired about here on the Forum and direct with Prospectum, but never heard back about), but is otherwise a great set.

FYI, the video is recorded at the organ of the Abbey Church in Neresheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The (wonderful) Prospectum model you mention is of the organ in Sts. Peter and Paul, Weissenau.

BTW, I've used it for a CD and many other recordings, and I have never heard the problem you are describing. There was one bad intermediate release on low F of the Hautbois, but Gernod fixed it quite quickly with an update.

YOu're right, the console looked so similar. Anyway, I'll have to start up HW and load the organ and check. One was a low note in the violonbass 8 (an accidental I think) that sounded an octave higher after the attack was gone and the steady state sound settled in. I only noticed it because I was playing a trio on two Flutes and using just the violonbass in the pedal. The other one may have been the Hautbois you mentioned. I haven't used the set much in recent months so will have to double check.
