3D surround via loudspeaker

PostThu Aug 31, 2017 2:28 am

Hello, all "main plant" organist,

For some time now, I have been experimenting with a good playback of a good success. Now I have found a solution which is so outstanding that I would like to publish here:

I use the organ - samples of a manufacturer with 3 storage locations (3x2 stereo = direct, diffuse, rear).
I will give this to the main channel without a premixing. Via a 6 channel sound card on my 6 speakers.

Here is the most important thing:

The front loudspeaker and rear loudspeaker provide the usual front mount (directly) - rear (diffuse).

The third pair of speakers is located over the front loudspeaker and is given the space (rear).

The front end - DIFFUCE - REAR, creates a sound, which is no longer coming from the speakers, but is spatially, in other words: Front - rear and top - bottom.
Thus, each tone is clear, transparent and differentiated with reverberation in the room.
It surpasses all expectations.

It is the future from "Hauptwerk"

[Topic moved here, since it relates to multi-channel audio routing.]

I think I understand the placement, but can you give a diagram to make it clear?

I hope it's so intelligible. The distance between the link on the right and the front should be x meters, at the height x / 2 above the front speakers

So all 3 channels (6 speakers) are stacked on top of each other, 3 on each side ?

OK, so if I'm getting this straight the arrangement involves a total of 10 speakers and utilizes a 6 channel sample set such as one from SP. Dingelstaedt is one example of this which I own so I can relate.

6 speakers in front that all receive the same 'main organ' i.e. the recording that is closest to the pipes. Are these speakers spread out or stacked?

2 speakers at the rear which receive the 'surround' signal.

2 speakers again to the rear (or?) which receive the 'diffuse' signal. The question is, where are you placing these speakers? Are they fully to the rear with the speakers receiving the surround signal, or are they placed somewhere at mid point between the front and rear speakers.

Is that right? If so..........

One observation I will make, use this as you wish: In my extensive routing experiments and speaker placement I wrote at length about in the past, the method of sending all 6 front speakers the same signal did not work out well, much clarity and realism is lost with that arrangement, pipes get buried in the mix, and it did not sound good. I currently have a very similar speaker arrangement to what is proposed here but with an entirely different routing scheme. The placing / routing alone as proposed here in my opinion would not make up for the front speaker loss of clarity issue as you are immediately fighting an uphill battle to correct that, but if routed correctly, this arrangement is as good as you'll get to the real thing.

No, in the front, the main channel is to the left and right, the upper left and the right over the main channel (as the room wall is placed at the corners), and in the back the two loudspeakers on the left and right in middle high.

OK, so 2 speakers up front, in stereo receive the 'main' signal.

2- speakers in stereo receive 'diffuse.'

2- speakers in stereo receive 'surround.'

Is your speaker layout:

This?
OO Front (main)

OO Mid (diffuse)

OO Rear (surround)

Or this?
OO Front (main)
OOOO Rear (diffuse) (surround)

In other words, do you have the diffuse and surround speakers in the same location behind you, or are the diffuse speakers positioned at some point mid way between the front and rear surround speakers?

the diffuse! speakers positioned are back

the surround speakers are in FRONT in the same location
above the main speakers
this creates the 3D effect
not between the front and rear surround speakers!

Gotcha! Interesting concept. Due to my speaker layout I do have the ability to try it. I'm sending both main and diffuse to a stack of 3 speakers on each side up front giving me the ability to adjust wetness, but also grouping each front pair by similar sounding / or what works with each other ranks. I have a side pair and back pair of speakers receiving the surround signal. Very spacious results with good clarity and seems to be similar in concept to what you're doing. As they say, there's more than one way to skin a cat.

there must be a defined recording and playback procedure similar to the Hybrid SACD which is possible via blueray player 100% reproduction. (see above link)
