VST reverb plugin recommendations

PostFri Nov 10, 2017 12:55 pm

I'm looking to add some reverb, using Cubase.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello Lawrence,

There have been quite a few previous threads in this section of the forum with reverb plug-in recommendations too, so it's probably worth having a dig around.
Best regards, Martin.

Thanks, Martin.

I figured there would be, but didn't find anything initially.

I'll go a-diggin' again . . . :-)

I'm quite fond of the Liquidsonics offerings. The basic free one is a good place to start. The Seventh Heaven VST's are quite special (but a bit more expensive!).
At least try reverberate!
(If you have an I-lok, DO the demo of Seventh Heaven)

I have an iLok on my studio computer, but could move it to the Hauptwerk computer for test purposes.

Download the Seventh heaven demos. (try both!) Do the I-lok trial code thing. I find East Church for fronts (2.5s is a good starting point) and West Church for rear (4.5-6s) works quite well. (Obviously, tweak the pre-delays, wetness etc to suit).

There are three versions of Seventh Heaven:

1. Seventh Heaven Professional
2. Seventh Heaven
3. Seventh Heaven with Professional Bundle

Which version are you recommending?

I figured it out. Really two versions (Seventh Heaven and Seventh Heaven Professional). Can also order both bundled for a small savings. Not sure why you'd want both, though.

Anyway, I'm going to try the demo.

There's actually 2. Basic and pro. The third option includes both. The pro is nice, but expensive. The basic is perfectly adequate for most purposes. (but try the demo of both. Depending on what you want, you may need the adjustments of the pro. HOWEVER, Reverberate 2 has a bunch of fusion verbs with far more adjustments than Seventh Heaven pro, which may suit for some instances. The eq vs. decay functions are especially useful when you want to alter specific characteristics in reverb tails, e.g. how prominent reed 2k reflections are in party-horns, etc.).
It really depends on which samples you are using and what you want to achieve.
With Rotterdam dry. I use a mixture of Seventh Heaven basic and Reverberate 2.
R2 gets used individually, per division, on the main front speakers, mainly for ER and space-location generation. These are summed to an instance of 7H to generate the front-side speaker response.(the main front reverb signal)
The summed signal, minus the chamades, is sent to another 7H instance for the rears. The chamades get sent to a separate R2 instance for the rear signal, which is summed to the rear 7H output.
(Before the questions start, chamades tend NOT to hit side walls on their journey down a building, therefore they exhibit distinct bounces from the back wall to the front one. Sort of like a ping-pong echo/stereo effect. It's better to model this separately, if possible.)

Probably TMI, but hopefully helpful.

Oops! We replied at the same time. I think the reason for the bundle is that the basic uses less CPU than the pro, so it's more advantageous to use it in complex tracks.

Great minds think alike, right? :-)

The licensing permits installs/usage on two computers at the same time (with an iLok on each, linked to a single iLok account).

So, I will plan to use this on the Hauptwerk computer as well as my Studio computer, assuming 'Thunderbirds Are Go' after evaluating the demo versions.
