Sheet music for this piece?

PostThu Jan 11, 2018 4:41 pm

I've searched quite a bit on the internet without much luck so thought I'd ask if any of you can direct me where to purchase this Psalm 68 ver 10 en 17.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8AWihu3RKo

There are many variations to the intro of the psalm but would appreciate if anyone might be able to direct me.

Thanks for your help

As far as I can make out, this tune is identical with that of the German chorale “O Mensch bewein dein Sünde gross”, famously set as a chorale prelude by Bach in the Orgelbüchlein. The original melody is from Strasbourg (1539) and Geneva (1542) and has its origin in the metrical psalm singing of the Calvinists. It’s also the melody for Psalm 36. I’ve traced it back to the standard book of psalms used in Dutch Reformed churches which you can buy: it’s called Liedboek 2013. I’ve figured out all this by looking at Dutch websites. I don’t speak Dutch, but I speak and read German which helps you to figure out quite a lot of Dutch texts. Apparently many Dutch Reformed churches practise Exclusive Psalmody, which means they are the only texts allowed to be sung in church services. It may be therefore that the many videos on YouTube featuring these psalms are from such a church. The organ introductions and interludes are presumably improvised.

This is indeed the Dutch psalm 68 (Genevan melodies)
And since i'm Dutch (and Reformed) I'm quite familiar with these psalms.
I have never seen sheet-music for this particular pre- and inter-ludium, so as UndaMaris said, I am also 99% sure that this is improvised. And if it isn't, i've never seen it for sale...

So best start looking for something different, there's a lot of beautiful psalm 68's out there

Very probably it is the arrangement for men's chorus by Klaas Jan Mulder, combined with improvised preludium and interludium.
