Best subwoofer 2018 under 1000?

PostSun Mar 11, 2018 5:31 pm

Hello,

If your max budget was 1000$, what subwoofer would you purchase? What about under $500? Yes, I realize there are dozens of posts about this but the most recent Is mid 2017.

If you can do some wood working:

The cost depends on which drivers (speakers) you use.

There hasn't been any updates since 2017 probably because we haven't seen anything new to hit the market. We can review specs and price easily but its the 'test drive' that seals the deal. The information found here on this forum is usually spot on. Here is a quick summary from my HW Forum research plus personal experience on several sub units.

DIY:
Decware "House Wrecker" (posted previously by Ed)
billfitzmaurice.com - Tuba HT

Powered Sub's that reach 16hz
SVS model - PB-2000, plus a few other models
Rhythmik Audio - FVX15, plus a few other models
Definitive Technology - Trinity Sub or similar models
Some older Paradigm models (according to published specs)

Maybe 2 powered subs that reach around 25Hz range (two < 1K)
Presonus - Temblor T10
Parts Express - Dayton Audio SUB-1500

Note I didn't list any pro-audio subs (i.e. Peavey, Mackie, QSC, etc.) since they are designed for a different purpose and many only reach 40Hz. For Hauptwerk use, there is more product overlap with home theatre or studio subs.

M-Audio BX Subwoofer (aka SBX10) and Tannoy TS2.12 both go to 20 Hz.
The former is under GB£300, the latter c.£600.

Allow me to add a reminder that the Rythmik Audio 15" unit can be held to about $1000 to $1100 for those who can do their own cabinet build. This is the only DIY project I'm aware of that will go to 16Hz without the external equalization that is required for a Tuba HT or similar units. Units like the Tuba HT can produce amazing output levels at perhaps $500 total cost but aren't flat to 16Hz without extra EQ. They also require a large footprint or extra height.

For a commercial unit under $1000 I'd ignore the bottom octave of a 32' stop and go for quality and clean output first and ignore the bottom octave. It's cool to feel (not hear) but not the most important thing musically.

EDIT: As a general rule go for the sealed models rather than ported. We are looking for musical results over the highest possible output in home applications. For Rythmik Audio that would be something like the F15HP.

Due to the smaller footprints, I was looking at the super cube by def tech, and the M audio bx10 mentioned above. I could get an Bx10 for about 150$ vs 600 for the def tech. Is it better to just spend less or will i be disappointed with the m audio?

They can't make these fast enought to keep in stock, it's that good.

We use a slightly modified version of the Dayton um15. At 12 cu ft. we recommend this for large spaces. Only buy from us if you don't have the DIY skill.

Yes, very high marks on these, Matt. Kits are relatively easy to use and well worth the time and effort.

A 1200 watt plate amp seems big, but it's up to the task of moving lots of (linear) air.

Regarding the Dynaudio subs, I see that the 18s is spec'd down to 16Hz -3dB whereas the 9s goes down to 22Hz -3dB. I don't know that I'd miss the bottom fundamental on a 32' stop but wanted to point out the difference between the two models. Looks like the 18s is a lot deeper front to back -- didn't check the prices.

The current Dynaudio models are quite expensive.

Dynaudio Sub 3 $1799
Dynaudio Sub 6 $2799

I don't expect the replacements to be lower priced.

I’m very happy at home with my Adam Sub8 subwoofer which is paired with two Adam A7 speakers.
