The report I read was from CNET, and it references a Department of Justice press release issued last Friday:

I thought it was a real cool 8) (since it was 93 F degrees here today) "message" for :D non techs to chew on. Just wonder what kind of reactions it may have created. Something like the children's story when thunder was heard - "The sky is falling, let us run and tell the king". :o

At least rebooting a router is harmless.

I've read the DOJ report and the security researcher's report. It is not fake news (for a change!).

There's a little more to it, since apparently a reboot does NOT remove the 1st stage malware (which appears to be a sort of boot loader for the 2nd stage, which does the bad stuff). So they have something on the order of a "honey pot" set up as a redirect point for requests from SOHO routers to load stage 2 of the malware.

It's definitely worth a "reset"

Shouldn't a reliable software like Norton, AVG, Panda etc...catch this sort of attack? (Altho I have rebooted my WIFI anyway)...?

Your anti-virus software is running on your computer. The router is 'way out in front' of your computer, and the anti-virus software does nothing to protect it.

My next question would be should you reboot your router regularly since it's so easy to do? OTOH, hackers would no doubt figure a work around. I regularly' reboot my internet computer and the Hauptwerk computer reboots every time it is used/played. As a followup, is there any evidence of this router cyber attack happening? I haven't heard of it, but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened. I feel pretty safe since the Hauptwerk computer doesn't ever connect directly to the Internet. Updates and new samples are loaded via a flash drive which sometimes do connect to the Internet however.
