Want to see and hear Zwolle and Thiérache live

PostThu May 24, 2018 2:38 pm

Hello Hauptwerkers.

This summer I am planning to visit Holland and Belgium in August. I would love to visit Zwolle and hear the organ there. Ditto for the St, Michel en Thiérache organ in northern France.

I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to find information about these places and their schedule of events. I suppose I need to put more efforts into Googling but so far none of the many suggested links that I have found contained anything useful.

Do any of you live near these places and/or have suggestions for finding out this information? Can anyone suggest other Hauptwerked organs that are worth visiting and hearing in the area where I am going?

Thank you!

A quite extensive agenda of organ concerts in The Netherlands can be found here: http://www.hetorgel.nl/nagconcert.htm. Unfortunately, in August no organ concerts in Zwolle are listed (yet). Looks like there are organ concerts once in two months only. But you'll find plenty of other interesting organ concerts

There are many sampled organs within 30-90 minutes driving from Zwolle.

Kampen 20 km
Raalte 25 km (sample set in development)
Vollenhove 35 km
Zutphen 45 km
Doesburg 65 km
Zeist 80 km
Utrecht 85 km
Anloo 90 km
Midwolda 120 km
Haarlem 135 km
Rotterdam 150 km

Many of those places are listed in the concert agenda which I linked above.

There is also " orgelagenda.nl " for a list of recitals all over the Netherlands.
I attended an excellent recital at Zwolle a few weeks ago and having heard the organ in the flesh I was able to tweak the voicing on my Hauptwerk version (slightly increase the volume of the upperwork) to make it more like the real thing. The Zutphen organ was covered in plastic sheeting while a new floor was being laid in the church but must now be functional as a recital is scheduled for today. Doesburg was locked up.
The Netherlands is a treasure chest of wonderful organs and friendly people.

For organ recitals in Belgium look here:

Not my experience at all, sadly. I tried visiting a few of the older/historic organs and you're lucky if you manage to talk to the person in charge; at most, you can look at the console while he plays. For the rest they won't even talk to you unless have certifications and degrees behind your name.

Different story for the smaller/newer organs in churches where the local organist might be a lot more friendly and willing to let you play. I met a few organists in my trip who were quite happy to let me play on "their" organs, and I did appreciate it, but I can do that here at home as well. It's the bigger/famous/historic organs that are locked down and you probably won't get close enough to those to even breath on them.

You are correct sonar11.
I didn't even consider trying assuming that to be the case, and in a way I can understand it considering the importance of these instruments. By friendly people I was refering to all those we came in contact with outside the organ world. Whilst trying to park in Haarlem a lady came out of her house and loaned us her parking disc which gave us three hours. You are also correct about smaller organs. We were welcomed by the local organist in Wichmond and allowed to play and examine the interior of a delightful small instrument.
I always let visitors play our Binns organ after a quick audition.

Dear Robert,

For the Grote Kerk Zwolle you could also check https://www.academiehuis.nl/evenementen for concerts. The agenda will be updated a few times a month (should be).

Also the church building is opened tuesday till saterday 11.00 - 16:00 and sunday 13:00-16:00 for visiting, tourist info and guided tour, exhibition. See https://www.academiehuis.nl/grote-kerk/bezoeken/

If you really need to play an organ in Zwolle :D , you could pm me for the plantagekerk Zwolle, https://www.orgelsite.nl/zwolle6.html and we will see if we could meet. Be aware it is holiday season then, so I cannot promise to be there all days of August.

Thank you to all who responded to my question about seeing organs in Holland and Belgium. It turns out we will be doing renovations on our house and have to put our energies into that, so no Europe for us this year. However with all the information we have now, we will be ahead of the game for planning our trip next summer.

Thanks again.

Ah what a pity the house has to come first.
I don't think this listing has been suggested yet.
