Many thanks for the excellent idea!
I made some modifications:
1. Use a short length of "shrink tubing" over the thread of the machine screw, near the head - leaving enough exposed thread to screw into the wooden dowel. Alternatively, (if you can find them - use 4mm bolts (not machine screws). Bolts are only threaded for part of their length and provide a smooth (non threaded) surface where they pass through the bottom plate. 4mm bolts are available but you need to check that the are, in fact, bolts and NOT machine screws.
2. A micro switch with approx 30mm arm provides a reliable and positive switching action. Mount on a right angle plate. They are available for a few GBP - I purchased 10 for about 12GBP - these are SPCO
3. Fix small felt pads (IKEA furniture protectors) 1x~12mm diameter (or smaller) under the head of the centre screw/bolt and 1x ~24mm on the other side of the plate. These provide a soft cushion and near silent operation. You will need to punch a hole in the pads of course.
Very happy with the results. I hope you find my comments useful?
