New Security Coming for Hauptwerk

PostWed Feb 13, 2019 6:22 pm

Good news!

We are implementing a completely new security system into Hauptwerk. This new security system will not only thwart any illegal piracy it will also be more efficient for both customers, producers and our resellers. Once the new security is in place and tested we will be contacting all sample set producers to allow them time to go over the options and information and to protect any old and new samples.

We are 100% behind the future development of Hauptwerk and making your experience better.

I will keep you updated as things progress and as we have more details to give you.

Thank you for your continued support!

Some of use were feeling a little gloomy with all this piracy talk, but now no more!
Keep up the good work!
Thanks!

And while you're at it, please tell us also when we can expect an updated version of HW run software? :D

I do not know if it would be viable, but it would be great if Hauptwerk allowed the user to choose between two authentication models: the current USB dongle or another one based on a remote Internet verification system (as Dirac Live does with success). As the owner of a portable notebook-based Hauptwerk system, which is attached to different digital consoles, my biggest fear is losing the USB dongle, which contains around 4000USD of software and sampleset licenses.

I'm completely the opposite here. I'd prefer to have absolutely NO internet connection required; once the sample is purchased, I should be able to use that sample indefinitely regardless of the state of MDA or the SP provider. If either company stops working on this, then I want the ability to build a new computer, copy my stuff over, and be up and running.

The USB Hasp is a very big problem in that regard, I'd prefer something less vulnerable to failure and damage. And periodic internet activation/authentication is something that will NEVER happen, I just won't buy samples like that, ever. It's going to bite everybody who purchases such samples.

I totally agree with Sonar11. I do not want to be connected to the internet to use the samples I have purchased. It is often not possible for me to have such a connection when I am enjoying playing, and I also would not purchase anything that required an internet connection to use it.

Agree as well. For average Joe user at home it would be an inconvenience, but can you imagine what kind of a hassle it would create for an installation at a church as an example? It's Sunday morning, the person that installed the organ and knows what they're doing isn't available, and you've got a less than tech savvy organist that all of a sudden finds out that Sunday morning that he or she would need to perform an update / verification online (on a computer that is highly unlikely to be online), or the organ won't work? Odds are they go without music that Sunday. I know this scenario is pure speculation and way our there, but food for thought and we're best to wait see what MDA comes up with, no need to go looking for problems where there are none. I'm sure whatever is coming will be well thought out and up to everyone's specs.

Yes, a permanent or temporarily internet connection for using a Hauptwerk-PC is an absolutely no-go! We will never connect these PC to the Internet. One of the reasons is that if you like to avoid glitches, long release ore loading time etc. you have to use Windows 10 without any updates, security updates, feature updates etc. Without this stuff Hauptwerk runs excellent. Also as mentioned before by others, in churches, funeral buildings etc. there is no Internet connection at all.

It is absolutely acceptable for updating the dongle with new samplesets using another PC with Internet connection (as we do today). But after that it is necessary to move the dongle (or whatever it may be) to any other Hauptwerk-PC without Internet connection.

Let me make another remark: We are since a lot of time develloper of specialised software in a very small medical market. Years ago we had the problem with piracy and hacking the locked software too. But when we made the price of the software only the half and offered it more modular, we sold 4 (!) times more and made a lot of money (forget the piracy!). I really think that the price of some samplesets are definitively too high (I know it's a lot of work and a small market).

Just an example: We like Rotterdam Laurenskerk Hoofdorgel Surround from Sonus Paradisi very much. But they sell it for 582 Euro plus Tax (that means in Germany 692 Euro) This is too much! For all because we (and I'm sure others, too) don't need all the stops of this giant organ. We have only 32 GB RAM in the Hauptwerk-PC. We don't need the Praestand 32' because our loudspeaker-system will not reproduce it. We don't need the Chamadewerk, we don't need the 4. Manual. I'm sure Sonus Paradisi would sell a lot more subsets if they would offer those subsets cheap. - It's just an example but it is true for a lot of samplesets from other vendors.

Am I completely wrong?

Best regards

To be fair, the idea of internet authentification was fairly clearly suggested as an optional second approach.

I stopped my cable TV subscription because it, also, is way too high. Because for the fact that there are so many extra channels that I didn't (nor ever will) watch. Between 'over the air' and what is offered on the Internet, I'm quite well informed. Now if cable would offer a "menu" and let a subscriber pick just channels they wanted, the price could and would be reasonable. But that isn't or won't ever happen. Their business model won't permit that.

Likewise, if sample set producers would offer a "menu" of which stops and/or features "we" want similar to what real pipe organ builders do - - - -. You get the idea. In that same vein, the cost of adding (future) add'l stops, etc, as, for instance, one moves on to a bigger, better computer, audio system or whatever, and could then use/buy add'l stops, features, etc. But, of course that (pay as you go plan) will never happen either. So as a result, it's a take (all of it) or leave it. In many cases, I have chosen the later.

Then of course, there would be the security updates. :o

Presently I have been looking to add certain solo stops. The only way is to buy a complete (large) sample set in order to get just a few solo stops - like no way. Did I hear someone say it might appear that we possibly have a one size (needs to) fit all situation?

An exception is Lavender's Armely Schulze offering several different "flavors". And, yes, there are some others. But it's safe to say, no one offers a "stop by stop" menu.

Ed

Straying off topic towards selecting stops for your own custom sample set - don’t forget http://organ.monespace.net/organworks/software/myco.html. You could build a good library of samples where copyright permits and select your own stops with this tool. You need to think a little about temperament, pitch and acoustics...but I can be fun...

I tried the MYCO editor very carefully some month ago with free samples from different free samplesets. Yes, it's a lot of work but it works (regardless of the small screen and other disadvantages etc). But for me the result is not really usable. Every organ has its own characteristic. If you mix the stops it sounds terrible (my personal feeling). Some other guys made a compilation of different organs, too. Do you really like them?

What I want are subsets of existing organs (see also the post by engrssc above). And I'm willing to pay for them a realistic price. But I don't like to buy an omnibus if I have to carry my familiy and some friends only.
