Just an example: We like Rotterdam Laurenskerk Hoofdorgel Surround from Sonus Paradisi very much. But they sell it for 582 Euro plus Tax (that means in Germany 692 Euro) This is too much! For all because we (and I'm sure others, too) don't need all the stops of this giant organ. We have only 32 GB RAM in the Hauptwerk-PC. We don't need the Praestand 32' because our loudspeaker-system will not reproduce it. We don't need the Chamadewerk, we don't need the 4. Manual. I'm sure Sonus Paradisi would sell a lot more subsets if they would offer those subsets cheap. - It's just an example but it is true for a lot of samplesets from other vendors.
I stopped my cable TV subscription because it, also, is way too high. Because for the fact that there are so many extra channels that I didn't (nor ever will) watch. Between 'over the air' and what is offered on the Internet, I'm quite well informed. Now if cable would offer a "menu" and let a subscriber pick just channels they wanted, the price could and would be reasonable. But that isn't or won't ever happen. Their business model won't permit that.
Likewise, if sample set producers would offer a "menu" of which stops and/or features "we" want similar to what real pipe organ builders do - - - -. You get the idea. In that same vein, the cost of adding (future) add'l stops, etc, as, for instance, one moves on to a bigger, better computer, audio system or whatever, and could then use/buy add'l stops, features, etc. But, of course that (pay as you go plan) will never happen either. So as a result, it's a take (all of it) or leave it. In many cases, I have chosen the later.
Then of course, there would be the security updates.
Presently I have been looking to add certain solo stops. The only way is to buy a complete (large) sample set in order to get just a few solo stops - like no way. Did I hear someone say it might appear that we possibly have a one size (needs to) fit all situation?
An exception is Lavender's Armely Schulze offering several different "flavors". And, yes, there are some others. But it's safe to say, no one offers a "stop by stop" menu.
