Fire at Notre Dame

First it was St. Sulpice. Now, Notre Dame is burning. Looks pretty bad.

They're reporting now that the spire has fallen INTO the church. It looks terrible. The roof has apparently completely collapsed.

Lots of fire behind the towers; the organ is probably burning as well.

St. Sulpice was lucky. This fire is a disaster.

PARIS, April 15 (Reuters) - Notre-Dame Cathedral went up in flames on Monday in a roaring blaze that devastated the Parisian landmark, a searing loss for the city and for France.

Flames that began in the early evening burst through the roof of the centuries-old cathedral and engulfed the spire, which collapsed, quickly followed by the entire roof.

A huge plume of smoke wafted across the city and ash fell over a large area.

"Like all our compatriots, I am sad this evening to see this part of all of us burn," President Emmanuel Macron tweeted.

"Basically the whole rooftop is gone. I see no hope for the building," said witness Jacek Poltorak, watching the fire from a fifth-floor balcony two blocks from the southern facade of the cathedral, one of France's most visited places.

Firefighters cleared the area around Notre-Dame, which sits on an island in the River Seine and marks the very center of Paris. Buildings around were evacuated.

"Everything is collapsing," a police officer near the scene said as the entire roof of the cathedral continued to burn.

Macron canceled an address to the nation that he had been due to give later on Monday evening. A presidential official said Macron was to go to the scene of the blaze.

France 2 television reported that police were treating the incident as an accident.

The cathedral, which dates back to the 12th century, features in Victor Hugo's classic novel "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame." It attracts millions of tourists every year.

Given the extent of the fire, it's hard to believe the organ survived … or much of nothing else for that matter.

Between the stone walls there would be such tremendous heat that would melt the pipes.

At any rate I believe the organ is gone.

If the bells in the towers collapse then the tower could collapse as well.

I think there is no doubt that the organ is gone, almost the whole church is burning. However, I really hope that they do not get into such an awful controversy about how to rebuild the organ as it happened in Dresden with the Frauenkirche and its organ.

Richard Engel on MSNBC just said (7:10pm) that the organ is OK.
First mention I've heard of the organ!

Perhaps now would be a good time for enterprising sample set producers to mail owners of prominent, historic, organs in France to see if they would be interested in making some back-up recordings?

Just a thought.

With such high temperature metal pipes get deformed, collapsed or melted :(

******Update

Emmanuel Grégoire /deputy mayor of Paris/ also brought a reassuring news for those who were particularly worried about the famous big organ with its five keyboards, its 109 games and its nearly 8,000 pipes:

"The good news is that very soon, the protection plan for the works was committed to shelter the most famous works of our heritage history. The other good news is that we had great concerns for the works inside and especially on this famous organ which is probably one of the most beautiful in the world: it is intact ". :D

Michel Picaud, from the Friends of Notre Dame organization responsible for the renovation efforts, told NBC News that, to his knowledge, the church's organ and stained glass windows were not damaged.
