Perfect Acoustics in Your Headphones?

PostFri Jul 12, 2019 7:45 am

I haven't tried this plug-in but it looks interesting if it can be adapted for use with HW.

They also have a device which mounts on the headset which changes what you hear according to your head position - called Head Tracker.?

I'm afraid head tracking wouldn't be of any valuable utitlity for Haupwerk users, would it? As for headphone calibration, Sonarworks Reference 4 / True-Fi software solutions seem to be at a much more advanced stage of development, and their list of average-profiled headphones is huge. For early hours Hauptwerk sessions at my home studio, I have been using Reference 4 with Sony WH-1000XM3 with great success. I'm still testing this software for speaker calibration, but Reference 4 is also providing me better results compared to the much more acclaimed software solution: Dirac Live.

Good information, thanks. I was looking for that kind of feedback.

If you use good studio headphones (I own an AKG K-812 for example), it is not necessary to modify the frequency response in my opinion, but for speaker management it's vital to avoid room modes.

Even for the best AKGs there's room for improvement. Look at this screenshot I have taken from AKG K-812 Sonarworks Reference 4 average profile:

And this is only frequency response curve, not to say time-domain correction, which is not plotted (nor, I think, plottable). As organists who are not only listening to a finished recording from the real instrument but also playing with delicate stop combinations, I think any improvement should be welcome.

Both Reference 4 Studio and Headphone editions have a generous free trial time. Their average profiles do not have <1db precision as the handmade profiles for individual phones purchased or calibrated by SW staff, but they promote a considerable improvement.

These may be of interest:

No first hand knowledge of them (they are very new, and I don't use headphones much) but my experience of other miniDSP products has been satisfactory. The specifications look good.

abaymajr:
Of course you can also improve a top-of-the-range headphone, but you have to know that the frequency response of a headphone is fundamentally different from that of a loudspeaker. The Sonarworks graphics shown are absolutely misleading. If you were to correct a headphone like this, it would sound harsh and annoying. I have recreated such a "reference curve" with the qoted HA-DSP on my K-812 and came to exactly this conclusion.

The K-267, on the other hand, which is only a quarter as expensive, benefits from sound tuning via the FIR filter: it now sounds much more open and detailed.
Best regards
