Encoding sample frequency/midi note number in wav files

PostWed Jun 17, 2020 8:46 pm

I’m interested in making extensions of pipe samples, but have had trouble figuring out how to encode pitch and MIDI number in the wav file. What utilities do people use? I have audition and pro tools, but I can’t figure out how to get those to work.

Hello larson2/Thomas,

Hauptwerk just reads pitches from the standard .wav file format (RIFF WAV SMPL chunk). Some audio editors can detect pitches and store them according in .wav files in that way. (E.g. I recall SoundForge was one.)

Also, we used to have a dedicated utility for detecting/storing sample pitches that we made available privately to sample set developers, but it hasn't been updated in some years, and doesn't work on Windows 10, I'm afraid. I'm not sure whether it's still available.
Best regards, Martin.

A utility that can embed midi note numbers, find the frequency of the sample, and also find loop points is LoopAuditioneer, which is available at loopauditioneer.sourceforge.net
But... using it will immediately give you the greatest appreciation of the work involved in even the smallest sample set!
