Downloading sample sets

PostWed Sep 16, 2015 7:49 am

I've been trying to downlad various demo sets. The downloads have often failed and needed to be manually restarted. So for a 4Gb download I have actually download the first 2Gb several times and downloaded 20Gb overall.

Could the file format be changed to a tourret type that automatically restarts from where the previous download stopped?

PS for some ISPs 20Gb would be a months interent usage limit.

The only reliable way how to download such huge files over internet is by using a download manager.
You can use the portable version of Firefox: http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable
Install this. Next (with Firefox) go to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/downthemall/ for the download manager. Click on the green button "Add to Firefox".

Next go to the site with the sampleset you will download.
With the mouse above the downloadlink click with the right mouse button on "start saving with dTAoneClick" and the download starts.
If the server supports resume (most of them do), the download continues after a broken line.

Alternatively, use programs such as FlashGet or FileZilla.

I think the problem is that many of these large files are placed on Web sites for download by Internet browsers that aren't really designed for that purpose. The standard for moving large amounts of data around the Internet is FTP, not HTTP, and if the files are placed on an FTP site instead and downloaded with FTP client software such as Filezilla there isn't a problem. I have no idea why most sampleset producers don't do this as it is quite straightforward.

You can also download from FTP sites using Windows File Manager / Explorer (the software you use to look at files that are already on your own computer). Open any folder (e.g. My Documents). If you then type the FTP address into the address bar at the top the login dialog will come up and once you have put in your user name and password the file list opens in another window - dragging the files to your desktop will start the download.

Wiki says it was abandoned by developers and became hostage to malware.

I have occasionally had to use a download manager on my Mac. I installed Folx, which worked well the couple of times I had to use it. It's easy to use, and it's FREE, which makes the price right :D
