Memory...

PostFri Jan 23, 2009 8:26 am

How important is it to get ECC memory.

I'm in the process of choosing memory for a 16GB system for under £1000 and didn't realise how tough it was going to be! There are so many 2GB chips to choose and very few 4GB. I've not found a motherboard (in the UK) which would support 8 DDR2 chips, and I've read somewhere that less is better anyway.

I've found a 16GB kit for £300, 800Mhz PC2-6400 but its not ECC. This is for a windows PC..

Try using the forum search for 'ecc' - there are lots of relevant posts, e.g.:

Basically it just depends whether absolute stability is important to you. If the computer will be left turned on constantly and used for public performance (e.g. installed in a public place) then I personally would say that ECC is essential, since a crash or audio glitch during a performance is probably to be avoided at all costs. But for home use the risk of those things occurring very occasionally might not matter too much.
Best regards, Martin.
