amplifier / speaker sets

PostMon Jan 12, 2004 6:37 pm

Just a note for those interested.

PC World are currently selling the 4.1 Logitech 560 speaker sets at £59.99!!!

When one bears in mind that this system consists of a 400 watt stereo amplifier 4 x satellite speakers and a sub capable of handling 32hz without drop off and down to 16Hz quite comfortably, they represent amazing value for money.

The normal price for these is about £150-200.

I bought 6 sets so that I could run the Great through L & R the Swell and Pedal similarly - in all 2400 watts !!!

The only downside is that the bass is so powerful that you can only run it at minimum levels unless you want to create a minor local earthquake.

I've also bought a further 2 sets now to replace my hi-fi. Yes, believe it or not, the sound is superior to a couple of Tannoy dual concentric speakers in giant cabs and a Denon amp. --- current cost of Tannoys = £several k and a similar amp to the Denon about £500 !!!

I'm posting the reply to Wannabes comments here since it was posted erroneously under console bits.

Believe you me, that whilst the actual speaker is only small, it packs one hell of a punch right down to 16' and quite well to 32'. So much so that it is rare that one can turn the bass control up past zero without rattling the windows.

I have a set of Tannoy dual concentric 15" in 1m x 1m x 1/2m cabinets and they have nothing like the power of these beasts. Having adequately produced a decent sound in the main hall at Nottingham Uni with the Tannoys, I reckon the Logitechs would do equally well if not better.

I bought 6 sets for organ use on a two manual which totals 2400 watts !!! This is more than adequate for most buildings.

I also further boost the 32's with a couple of Roksan bass units which go right down to 17 Hz before roll off. and handle 300 watts apiece.

When all said and done, these Logitech speakers are selling at £60.00 a set and therefore my 2400 watt set up cost a mere £360.00 !!! which I think is pretty well unbeatable.

Check out John Bittner's posts on Subwoofers for Organs

I'm thinking about the http://www.svsubwoofers.com/subs_pcplus_16-46.htm partially because of the product description:

> ... the 16-46.... If you like Pipe organs---this is probably the model to get....

Search for "pipe" on http://www.svsubwoofers.com/faq.htm#whatsize

How transparent is the midrange? Bass is nice, but a balanced sound is my preference. Most 2-way systems have suffered in the "middle". Extreme highs are seldom an issue for organ work.....and I doubt I could hear them anyway.

SVS, http://www.svsubwoofers.com, just does subwoofers.

For midrange I've ordered 2 M-Audio Studiophile BX8 Bi-Amplified Studio Reference Monitors: http://midiman.com/index.php?do=product ... 8ac27abac8

The Mackie HR824 Monitors http://www.mackie.com/products/hr824 sounded better but they were three times the price.

I believe Classic Organ Works, http://www.organworks.com, used the Studiophile BX8s when they demoed their products last year.

I'll update this post when I have the speakers installed.

The past few months I have been borrowing a friend's HiFi system. The results were much better than my 33 watt Logitech computer speakers, but I didn't feel comfortable playing full organ, or playing too loud because I didn't want to damage the equipment.

I ordered two M-Audio Studiophile BX8s from http://www.samedaymusic.com/product--MDOBX8 for $ 480 USD. (No taxes and no shipping.) They arrived a day early and I couldn't be happier. With the speakers at half volume and my computer at half volume I'm blowing myself away. The bass sounds so good I'm going to hold off getting a subwoofer. Side by side Mackies would probably sound better, but they're a lot more expensive.

If you're willing to spend £200 ($ 365 USD) you might consider spending 32% more.... for 2 M-Audio Studiophile BX8s.

IMHO
