Building a console

PostSun Jul 11, 2010 5:37 pm

I've started planning the console for my organ, but have no clues on which design I should go for. I have some real organ pipes (metal) which I plan to use as a decorative element (I do NOT plan to make them work!!!), and I want the organ to look like a small pipe organ when it's finished. I am thinking two towers on each side with the pedalboard and keystack in the middle, probably a room for the amplifier above the keystack with pipes in front.

Any ideas or suggestions? Pictures of small organs? All ideas and inputs are greatly welcome! :)

Vidar,
Excited for you to start your console! You've made some really good stuff so far.

Here are some different console types that you could look at...

The Roland C-330 (Very similar to the Johannus Opus 7 Raco) I know you have 3 manuals, I've thought about this type of console before. If you wanted to maybe attach a touch screen on one of those metal arms on one, or both of the sides.

You could build a console similar to an Allen. Look at the picture below, you could just mount touch screens where the rocker tabs are. Unless you want to get real serious and make a console with real drawknobs or rocker tabs.

This might not be the best choice if you are looking for something more compact.

This is someones Hauptwerk console... It was made by the Mixtuur company. You don't have to put touch screens on the music stand, you could just put them on the top on the sides? But this is a pretty compact console.....

And of course there is the Milan Digital Audio-Hoppe Console. A pretty simple design... Not as compact as the others

There are a lot more different console types. What do you have in mind?
Thanks!

Thanks Joe, but that's too simple! :D
I'm thinking about something like this:
http://www.pcorgan.com/images/console/MarkWilliams.jpg
or perhaps this:
viewtopic.php?f=15&t=5099

A simple console with manuals and pedals is not an option - I want my organ to look like a small, real pipe organ when it's finished. The sound, however, will NOT be small! :D

I am going to mount the touchscreen on one side of the manuals, and there will be space for another screen on the opposite side too.

How about a Google image search for Johannus Monarke to inspire you somewhat? For instance

and they have many more ideas.

I'm looking at all the black satin color in your avatar and thinking about the elegant black console from a previous post:

Perhaps a larger more ornate console in basic black??
Of course I've been around more pianos than organs and may have a bias!

Also, think about what style you want the console to have, eg. Baroque, romantic, modern etc. This effects the color, pipe placement etc. Or you can make your own style and really surprise us! Since you are using touchscreens, I would go with something more modern. A baroque organ with screens dosen´t feel right...
Good luck!

John, the color is actually dark brown, between dark oak and wenge. :)

I haven't decided on the style, and I am not that concerned about it. It will probably be a blend of different styles. I will avoid too much ornaments and difficult shapes - less is more! :)

I've gotten a lot of images of different smaller instruments, and "something" is emerging. But I still welcome inputs, thoughts and ideas.

The color scheme will be dark brown, since the pedal board and the keystack is painted in that color. The pipes will be polished (is it a good idea to use a clear laquer on them?) with black speaker fabric behind (the speakers will be placed behind the pipes and the fabric). Perhaps with details in light oak. I am not strange to the idea of adding gold-colored ornaments above the pipes (pipe shades?), which will be of different heights. Time will show...

I got some from the old organ in the Ishavskatedralen (The Arctic Cathedral):

I purchased most of the pipes that where left. Better have too many than too few... :)

I also got some from the old organ in the local church (Narvik kirke), which my father salvaged when the new organ was installed back in 1982 (http://www.fagerjord.org/index.php/orga ... urch-organ).

Aaaaaaaand... here we go!

I've purchased a lot of wood, and have created a rough sketch of the console. More on my website:

Boy, I can't wait to get the sawdust up in the air again! Woodworking is highly addictive, folks!
