Re: Adding General Presets to Salisbury
I would agree, and add that in general it is much better to use the Hauptwerk internal pistons, as they can be assigned to the physical controls globally (i.e. for all sample sets), which makes setting up much faster when you install a new organ, and also means that you don't have to remember lots ...

Re: Missing the dropdown menus
I haven't used HW 9, but after getting every previous update from 3 onwards I can't see that there are any new features that I would actually want to use. Windows is designed to be navigated many different ways, and as a touch typist I tend to use keyboard shortcuts a lot. I have really appreciated ...

Re: Launchpad Use
I use mine for a number of different things. Selecting organs to load, combination files and temperaments from the menus, adjusting the volume, master reset and MIDI reset are the main things. I sometimes use them for rearranging the order of the keyboards on the fly (using HW's virtual divisions ...

Re: "Essential" samplesets
I will concur with that. I went to Richard's recent recital at SMR and a few rows back from the front of the nave (so quite close to the console) it was deafening. We had to move further back, and even towards the back of the nave it was still very loud. Mind you, Salisbury is uncomfortably loud ...

Re: St Mary, Redcliffe
First impressions are very favourable. It has a definite sense of presence and realism that most Hauptwerk organs don't really have; those that do are mostly smaller instruments in a much smaller acoustic - Noordbroek comes to mind. I have loved the way it sounds with Franck and Whitlock, and there ...

Re: York!!!
We did something similar at school in the 1970's (yes, we had an actual computer - a second-hand Marconi-Elliott 903 which I suppose could be described as a rather cut-down mainframe) though ours only had 8 kB RAM. I can't remember quite how we did it. I think it was something to do with turning the ...

Re: ERROR: could not allocate memory
Thank-you, Martin, Iain and Jerry for your very prompt and thorough responses. I was indeed loading the ambience samples in 24-bit. I tried loading them in 16-bit and leaving everything else in 24-bit, but I had much the same error (the segment size was smaller). I then tried loading everything in ...

ERROR: could not allocate memory
I have downloaded and installed St. Mary Redcliffe and tried to load it for the first time. It has twice halted after nearing completion with the following message: "Could not allocate #.1f MB of memory because it's larger than the memory pool segment size of 2048 MB" "Message code (for diagnostic ...

Re: St Mary, Redcliffe
Regarding the demo: At £695 including VAT this is one of the more expensive sample sets on offer. Having previously bought sample sets that I have ended up not using much (more than once, alas) I don't want to spend this much without being sure that it will work well in my system. I see that for £20 ...

Re: York!!!
I grew up with the Hill organ in College Chapel at Eton College, though mostly I used to practice on the T C Lewis instrument in Lower Chapel, which has now been replaced by a new one by Kenneth Tickell. None of the HW sample sets really come close to it. There was also a Dutch organ in Shcool Hall ...

Re: York!!!
I think it might be a bit of a stretch to describe it as a Hill. According to Harrison & Harrison, Elliot and Hill built an organ in 1834, and Hill & Son reconstructed it in 1869. However, Walker & Sons built a new organ in 1903 incorporating some of the old pipes, which was then revoiced and ...

Re: York!!!
Of course if you don't want to load any more than one perspective, or any sampled tremulants, and only load one sample per pipe, you can cut your RAM requirements down by an order of magnitude. If you then don't load in 24 bit and maybe truncate the release tails (using IR instead if you wish) you ...

Re: What is your favorite Simplest for practice with headphones?
I don't use headphones, but one of my favourite sample sets for practice is St. Mary-le-Bow from Lavender Audio. Although the organ has two manuals, the sample set is supplied with an extended version as an alternative which has three manuals and forty-something stops. It is beuatifully voiced in a ...

Re: DHMidi-Organs - UK reseller
I recently bought a sample set from DHMidi. After placing my order via his Web site I sent an email as I hadn't heard anything for several days. Douglas replied that he was on holiday and would process it on his return, which is exactly what he did. I appreciated him taking the trouble to interrupt ...
