BIOGRAPHIES

Thomas Mellan is an organist, composer, harpsichordist and pianist. Since 2019, he is the organist in residence of the Jacaranda concert series in Los Angeles. He has performed in spaces including Église St. Eustache in Paris, Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, the Wanamaker Organ in Philadelphia, St. Antoine l’abbaye and others. In 2018, his European tour culminated in a residency at the Lviv Organ Hall in Ukraine, where he gave the Ukrainian Premiere of Messiaen’s Livre d’Orgue. His compositions have been performed in the US, France, Ukraine, Portugal, Canada and Malaysia. He studied organ with Cherry Rhodes and Jean Guillou, and composition with Andrew Norman, Frank Ticheli and Donald Crockett. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music in organ and composition in 2017 and a Masters in organ from the USC Thornton School of Music in 2019.

Ella Sharpe began double bass at seven years old under the tutelage of her father in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She is now in her second year of undergraduate studies with David Allen Moore at the Thornton School of Music. Ella has had the opportunity to perform internationally under the direction of Marin Alsop, Christoph Eschenbach, Michael Tilson Thomas, and Valery Gergiev. She has performed in prestigious concert halls including but not limited to Carnegie Hall in New York, the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, and the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing. At 17, Ella was one of eleven young bass players to make it to the semi-finals of the 2017 International Society of Double Bassists Solo Competition (15-18 division). In 2019, she was selected as a double bass fellow at the Sarasota Music Festival. Ella regularly performs with the USC Thornton Symphony as well as the Early Music Ensemble of USC.

Espen Nystog Aas is a Norwegian clarinetist who is currently pursuing his Master’s degree at USC with world renowned clarinet professor Yehuda Gilad. He holds a Bachelor's degree from the Norwegian Academy of Music and a Graduate Certificate from USC Thornton School of Music. Espen is a versatile player with experience in many different genres. He was awarded a fellowship with the Norwegian Wind Orchestra for his free classical improvisations, which led to concerts in Frankfurts Alte Oper, NDR Hamburg and a premiere at Oslo Contemporary Music Festival. Together with Åsbjørg Ryeng on Bandoneon, Espen enjoys a break from the classical world with genres such as klezmer, balkan and tango music. With “Swing’it Dixieband,” he has played in jazz festivals across Europe and recorded two albums. When not playing music, Espen can be found cycling in the canyons or sailing the blue Pacific.

An active performer and composer in Los Angeles, Tristan Heinicke is a third year Bachelor of Music in Composition at the University of Southern California. He currently studies with Frank Ticheli, and has previously studied with Sean Friar and Ted Hearne. Tristan’s music explores the space between what is unspoken and what is understood, the translation of mediums, maximalism, and personal identity as the lens for the performer and audience’s understanding. He frequently uses musical and visual mediums interchangeably, as well as guided and free improvisations.

During the pandemic, there are no audiences, but some musicians still use Hauptwerk to record. Thomas Mellan created this using Hauptwerk's audio recording feature.

In Memorium--Dr. Namhee Han (1970-2020) in Reprise on Hauptwerk Player-Organ. June 11 and 25 at 8 pm in Los Angeles.

Dr. Han passed away on March 27, 2020 from unexpected complications of cancer treatment.

Namhee Han shared her favorite music with friends at Stan's Music Parlor for more than 20 years, often prior to public concert tours. Namhee liked to record herself on the player-organ for performance to prepare music. Sometimes she would leave the recording in my organ computer for me to hear later. She recorded 30 concert pieces for me. I have prepared the player-organ to share them with others, live and on a Facebook Videos playlist. Memorial programs will be LiveStreamed on Facebook Stan's Music Parlor and may be view as video recording there afterwards.

He was a two-time recipient of the President’s Honor Recital (2016 and 2017), where he performed a recital in the presence of the University’s president. Since the age of twelve, Mallory Haney has been serving churches both in Chile and the United States. She is currently organist for La Cañada Congregational Church. She is enrolled in the program of Master of Music in Organ Performance at the USC Thornton School of Music, where she is studying with Professor Cherry Rhodes.
