Pedal Stop via Pitch Change

PostFri Sep 25, 2020 11:40 am

In my sample sets often the lowest few notes of an otherwise great 32 ft flue stop are mainly just wind sounds.
Before I undertake re-pitching a 16 footer down, has anyone done this and was it effective and realistic sounding?
Thanks,
Doug

Can be done, with the unrealistic effect that the reverb time will be two times longer.

Could it be that your room is not large enough for the 32' sound wave? If that is the case, you would experience the same loss with another stop.

Thanks All,
I have non HW module 32's that work fine. Also the stop I propose to re pitch is dry. Will the application of V convolution reverb be affected?

With dry samples, it probably works fine. Convolution reverb is completely independent from the samples.

You could also try a 10 2/3 pitch stop. Depending which rank you choose and how it is voiced, it can sound pretty authentic.

The free Audacity software can repitch without impacting tempo - so could achieve what the OP is after without changing the recorded reverb time. I haven't the faintest idea whether the results would be musical, or whether it would be easy to mark up the WAV file(s) in a way which HW could read, or how easy it would be to change the ODF.

Personally I have to say that I'm sceptical about 32' stops anyway, but that's an aesthetic judgement!
