Building a New Organ - Entirely From Scratch

PostTue May 18, 2021 5:57 pm

I've decided to start another instrument. This will be my Op. 3. I have a good idea in mind for what I want the final instrument to be....

I decided I wanted to build a Continuo after being inspired by Romanos.

I want this to be the most authentic Hauptwerk-based continuo there has yet to be.

The organ will be built in its entirety by me using of a combination of Walnut and Maple, with physical draw knobs (with authentic tracker linkages), swappable draw knob face labels (to accommodate changing sample sets), all wood keys, a 16 channel internal audio system (custom designed and built just for this purpose). and a solid wood case.

I started by building the manual.....

The pins, springs, and contacts are on order and should arrive in a few days. Felt, washers, etc. have already arrived. I'm really hoping this ends up working as well as it looks. It looks good, but to be honest, I'm a little concerned about functionality.

Ultimately, once completed, I am pretty sure I will put this up for sale - as I honestly have no room or need for ANOTHER organ. But, if no one wants it, I suppose I will add it to the collection.

I will try to keep this forum up to date on its progress, but you can also keep up with it on my website by checking in once a week.

Eh, not really. I have seen this video but ultimately, what really started all of this was that I really wanted to push myself to see if I could build everything from scratch and do an immaculate job of it. We will see.

Sixteen audio channels. Mechanical everything.... mechanical keyboard action, mechanical stop action..... the works. I want to do my best to fool even the most astute.

I FINALLY got some time to work on this....

I decided to prototype the first octave. Now that it feels good, and the contacts, key travel, etc. are all figured out, I will duplicate and continue on up the other octaves. The only "issue" now, is the spacing around the "A" key - somehow that got off.

That keyboard is so lovely. You're doing very fine work, Drew!
