Core Kit of Components for Automatic Stop Labelling

PostTue Jun 08, 2021 6:26 am

Good afternoon all.

If you would like electronic labels on your Hauptwerk Organs I am glad to say that the process has now been made much easier. I can supply a Core Kit of Components and a detailed Constuction Manual which will enable the majority of users to add these labels to their Hauptwerk Console.
The Core Kit comprises:
- professional quality laser cut Left & Right Stop Plates in Black Acrylic or Quality Beech Ply;
- especially designed Printed Circuit Boards.
Three PCBs in Left & Right Stop Jambs permit 120 stops to be labelled.
Smaller jambs can be built using only one (for 20 labels) or two for 40 labels) PCBs per Jamb;
- a Micro-controller + Propietary Software in each Jamb drive the labels on completion of an organ loading;
- the Construction Manual may be purchased with the Kit, or separately, to allow a full assessment of what is involved in the project.
I am able to supply almost all of the other components if required, but the lead times and availability of some of them is outside my control. All of the other components can be purchased online from many sources, and full specifications are included.

Feel free to ask any questions!

Most interesting. Thanks for sharing. Some general questions please?
What are the dimensions of the 60 stop jamb?
What power supply is required and can you provide this?
Can you give an example of a specific Midiboutique encoder/decoder which you recommend?
Are the switches you supply ‘nearly’ silent?

I’ll ask about the price ex forum if you think that would be better.

Thanks, Ian.

SIZE:
As delivered, the stop plates are h21" x w14". However there is about 3"-4" at the bottom of the plate the Microcontroller is supported that could easily be cut off if necessary to reduce the height; it also keeps the lower stop buttons clear of the key cheeks. The 20/40 stop sizes are the same height - you just reduce the lateral size by judiciously cutting off a vertical section of the plate.
The Jambs overall are about 10" wide (reduced in width by the angle of course) and their depth is up to you, but you should affixed the encoder & decoder to the inner & outer walls of the housing (indide of course).
POWER:
For the labelling, the OLEDs are driven via the USB feed to the microcontroller. You will definitely need a powered USB hub with a Mac -I use two as I have loads of USB stuff on my console. All the Windows PCs I have used have been able to drive 34 OLEDs out of the controller with no difficulty. In fact on a different design, I have driven 60 SSD1306 OLEDs.
For the switches & their LEDS, you need a 9-12v DC supply which can easily be shared between the Encoder power, the Decoder power, and the Decoder drive to the switch LEDs.
I have had these kinds of arrangements running for over a year one way or another with no issues.
EN/DE/CODERS:
In my current jambs I have used OrgautoMatech Encoders & Decoders. In a previous console I used MIDI Boutique but I cannot recall which, but the currently available mpc64up MIDI Encoder and mdec64 MIDI Decoder look as though they'd be fine.
SWITCHES:
The switches I am using and am able to obtain are quite silent - they just make a fairly quiet click when pressed (or hit!). They are micro-switch based so you can probably guess the sound.

Prices are detailed in the Construction Manual which is available in the Core Kit or separately, but I am happy to email the outline details if you drop me an email (KAS@KASpencer.com). The manual is currently being printed in a low volume at the moment.

I hope all that helps, Iain

Best wishes,

Ken

Interesting! Looks like two stops for each OLED?

Thanks, Josq.
Yes, the first design that I did used 0.96" OLEDs, and each just showed one stop label - so I had to have 60 of them!
So for the second design I have used larger OLEDs which show two stop labels per OLED.
But also, there are four extra OLEDs on each stop jamb that show the organ details and they also label each division.
