In other words, instead of Hall effect sensors, using dry contacts connected to a diode matrix possibly?

Quite a while ago, I used Roman's Hall Effect system on a pedal board conversion and the client connected it to an Arduino encoder with no problems. AFAIK, he's still using the original setup after 5/6 years. I wasn't involved with the Arduino, portion.
