Interesting Dell Benchmark

PostTue Jul 27, 2021 5:16 pm

I recently helped configure a new Hauptwerk installation from scratch. The computer I recommended and ended up being purchased is a Dell XPS 8940 with a 1TB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive, 32 GB of RAM, and the processor is 10th Gen Intel CoreTM i7-10700 processor(8-Core, 16M Cache, 2.9GHz to 4.8GHz)
The operating system (Windows 10 Professional) loads in about four seconds. The Salisbury Volume 3 with 24 bit uncompressed samples loads in 17 seconds.
I set the computer up to use Francois' simple bat file to automatically load Hauptwerk 6.02 on power-up (using only a 1 second delay in the script). The total time from power-on through to OS loading, Hauptwerk loading, and Salisbury ready to play is 47 seconds.
Shutdown including unloading the cache is 3 or 4 seconds.

How does this compare?

Last year I built a very similar spec'd Hauptwerk computer for a customer. Using Friesach (24bit, uncompressed) as a bench mark, my cold boot to -> ready to play was 64 seconds.

If I compare organ specs; Salisbury at 24.2 GB vs Friesach at 13GB your system is the winner! You must have the Intel Optane feature to have Win10 operational in 4 seconds from a cold boot. My boot time was quick but not like that! I changed the standard audio driver delay in HW5 (set at 5 sec?) to a "1". This lessened my bench mark time.

Did you really mean 64 minutes or 64 seconds?

With today's technology, 64 minutes is totally unexpectable. My Armley Schultze loads from power on completely in quite a bit under 64 seconds.
