Windows 11: Everything You Need to Know

PostThu Jun 24, 2021 4:09 pm

https://www.tomshardware.com/news/windows-11-everything-you-need-to-know

One interesting new feature (that I wonder if Hauptwerk could utilize this new feature) i.e., if HW could take the place of game in this statement:

"DirectStorage Helps Load Times
Another Xbox feature now bound for Windows, DirectStorage allows your game to load content directly from your NVMe SSD into your GPU’s memory, without using a lot of CPU resources. This means faster level load times and less time spent waiting".

Can be sure because HW doesn't require much in the way of graphics (GPU). Still aan interesting thought in theory to be able to load HW and a sample set faster using the NVMe SSD would be cool. 8)

Windows 11 Minimum System Requirements

PostThu Jun 24, 2021 5:13 pm

CPU 1 GHz or faster with 2 or more cores on a compatible 64-bit processor or System-on-Chip (SoC)

Graphics Card Compatible with DirectX 12 or later with WDDM 2.0 driver

RAM 4GB

Storage 64GB

Display 720p display that's greater than 9 inches diagonally, 8 bits per color channel

System Firmware UEFI, Secure Boot capable

TPM Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0

Internet Connection Windows 11 Home edition requires internet connectivity and a Microsoft account to complete device setup on first use. Switching a device out of Windows 11 Home in S mode also requires internet connectivity. For all Windows 11 editions, internet access is required to perform updates and to download and take advantage of some features. A Microsoft account is required for some features.
Windows 11 requires a 1 GHz or faster CPU with 2 or more CPU cores on a 64-bit processor; 4GB of RAM; a 64GB or larger storage device; system firmware that supports UEFI and secure boot; Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0; DirectX 12 compatible graphics; a display greater than 9-inches with a resolution of at least 720p and an internet connection.

We have reached out to Microsoft to clarify if TPM 2.0 is a minimum requirement only for pre-built and laptop OEMs.

Microsoft also noted that "certain features require specific hardware."

The free upgrade isn't a huge surprise. Windows 10 was offered as a free upgrade for a while , and licenses are typically sold to PC and laptop OEMs as well as to businesses.

You can also download and run Microsoft's PC Health Check app to see where you stand. Those who can't upgrade can stay on Windows 10, which will continue to be supported through October 2025.

Not sure if many HW computers can meet the TPM 2.0 requirement.

Microsoft said: “Since launching Windows 10 six years ago, a lot of hardware innovation has happened in the PC space. For Windows to move forward and take better advantage of the latest innovations, we need to update the baseline system requirements for modern PCs.”

Time to sit back and wait for the virtual dust to settle (just as some of us did re HW V6. :)

Bummer! My i7-3930K processor and Asus Rampage IX Extreme MB both support TPM-2 but the processor is not on Microsoft's approved CPU list.
I'll wait a year or so to see if chip prices come down before replacing my 64GB system. About $1400 to upgrade now.
If HW ran on Unix I could keep it and dedicate it to the pipe organ.

As can be expected, there are more questions than answers so far. It appears even some computer manufacturers weren't up front knowledgeable either. Most likely will take time. OTOH, if one has a quality working Hauptwerk system, stay with and enjoy it. There will always be these "controlled" obsolescence situations. That's how IT works. It appears for the most part, just about all of the new features aren't what programs like HW could use, but rather directed toward the vast numbers of "other" computer users. IMHO.

Interesting too, there isn't much intelligent chatter going on either. Most of it coming coming from those that enrolled in the MS Insider program who get an early "heads up".

Curious what Martin's reaction is. And he always has been very meticulous about searching out the facts first. That makes his comments esp valuable. :)

Hello Ed,

I don't know yet. We will have to wait and see whether Hauptwerk works satisfactorily on it (hopefully so!), or whether changes will needed in order to support it properly in the medium term. As with any major new platform, we'll need to let people know in due course.
Best regards, Martin.

I also have the 3930K. That is really brazen of Microsoft.

With this Microsoft-Tip you can install Win11 WITHOUT TPM and SecureBoot (for older PC's).
https://www.deskmodder.de/wiki/index.ph ... installien

In short - it's a Registry key:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\LabConfig]
"BypassTPMCheck"=dword:00000001
"BypassSecureBootCheck"=dword:00000001

With the Program WindowsPCHealthCheckSetup.msi you can check the Win11-Integrity.
An update is to come because too many false reports are produced.

Thanks for that, a translation would good. Mein Deutsche ist nicht so gut.

I'm guessing as time goes on, there will be workarounds. No doubt, MS can justify (at least to themselves) that everything they fo is to (their) best interest(s). An advantage of being BIG. :o

I have to translate everything from the forum into German. Do the same for German into English.

MS has removed the classical start menu. But you can activate this:

But Google can translate complete pages if you copy the link into the editor.

Please translate the part "Criticism" from the german wikipedia version about TPM - it differs from the english wikipedia.
The PC may become unusable with TPM in case of errors.

Win11 doesn't really bring anything new. It may look a little different, but in principle all the statements about the new version are just "hot air" and not things that improve anything (what Microsoft wants us to believe). A few advertising icons are rather annoying (Netflix, Spotify etc.).
Hauptwerk will work just like it does under Win10.
