PC-recording

PostFri Oct 21, 2005 8:54 am

I have two B&K-cond-mics and no experience in recording audio;-)

Can I use a PC with a 24 bit/96 kHz soundcard inside to sample an organ?
Or should I use an external AD-Konverter due to electric disturbing signals?

Depends (as most things depend in some way).

1) I'd recommend using external pre-amps
2) If you have an external AD-converter, why not use it? Should reduce some noise.
3) PC soundcards mostly don't have phantom power and don't offer symmetrical interfaces. Phantom power is needed for many condensator-mics and symmetrical interfaces reduce noise, too.
4) The less way is between the signal and the recorder, the better is the quality. So, if your sound card offers all of the above mentioned things, go for it.
5) Your PC most probably makes some audible noise. It should be standing as far away from the mics as possible (like in another room).

What sound card so you have and use?

I can also use B&K Sound Level Meters as meas.-amplifier, or - if necessary - a 2-channel-acoustic-analyser.

They all have AC-outputs with 1 V eff. This matches the input voltage range of a typical sound card. Doesn't it ?

But I don't know, wether el. noise of the PC will affect the quality of the recording.
