Pull/push stops : an easy way to do this !

PostFri Aug 31, 2012 12:40 pm

Hello Freinds

After one year with this :
http://forum.hauptwerk.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=9326
I decide to change, because it wasn’t perfect.
There were some short-circuits, too many wires, and no label …

Except a touch screen, I was searching for the easiest, effective, not too big.
And the solution is : a keyboard !
But I had to found a idea to keep the keys in the “on” position
I found the solution by looking at some traditional organ couplers !
Lets make with a finger the same thing than with a feet !!

A friend of mine does some models with a robotic tool.
I asked him to make this :

I used an old synthetizer and some clothepegs !

I found some transparent plastic “things” . (like in shops, to put labels in front of the shelves.)

Here is how I can pull/push the stops now, I’m fully satisfied !
I don’t need to look at the screen or catch the mouse anymore.

It hurts my eyes to see screws going thru the keyboard keys (I also do synth restoration occasionally), but it seems unbeatable in terms of price per stop. Very clever, and despite generic parts used it looks very nice.

Having just recently come across this post, I must admit that I am always amazed by the ingenuity of Hauptwerkers. And despite the use of clothes pins, the execution is very elegant.

Alternatives come to mind, however.

One could use drawknobs instead (dowels with drawer pulls as heads) mounted above an axle passing through vertically mounted little pivoting arms. When the draw knob is pulled out, the top of the arm moves forward while the bottom of the arm pivots down and back, until, in a vertical position, it holds the key securely down until the stop is retired. This is similar to the stop rail action on many reed organs.

This mechanism could be mounted in an attractive box and placed on top of a fourth manual. And, if the arms are properly felted, there is no harm to the keyboard and the box can simply be lifted off at any time.

Has anyone tried gluing magnets underneath the keys so that when it is pushed down, it is held by a second magnet a little lower down? The magnets should not touch or they would be difficult to separate. Gluing some felt on one of the magnets could yield the desired "touch."

The above approaches all share a common problem: if a combination is pushed the drawn stops and the stops drawn on the virtual will no longer be in sync.

Using the keyboard/stop rail in toggle mode solves this but one loses the indication of which stops are on. However this is easily resolved by using LEDs and a decoder to read the stop change messages sent out by the virtual organ. A single Arduino can decode up to 64 such stop messages and directly light the appropriate LEDs.

Look for my posts under DIY organ consoles / MIDI to see how this is done. In particular, the posts on the Arduino based decoder and Lighted Stop Rails.
