Re: How to: Posting images on the forum

Hello friends,

I saw a couple of questions about image posting, and wanted to add an option that works for me as of today, 9/15/2020 :)

I use imgur.com

1) Set up a free account at imgur.com
- if you wish you can upload multiple images, sort them into albums etc.
2) When you have all the images you want to share, click on your profile name, then "generate image links" from the "view image info" dropdown, and select the images you need.
3) In the final dialog that shows up, select the "BBCode" and "large thumbnail" options. (The "large thumbnail" option will auto-resize the images to the max width supported on the forum of 640px)
(Screenshots below for this post)

Hope this helps some folk!

Re: How to: Posting images on the forum

PostMon Dec 19, 2022 6:14 am

Hello,

I get the following message: "It was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image."
And yet:
- the size of my image is 144 pixels,
- my image is in JPG format,
- my image is not protected by a password,
- my image comes from my Google Drive,
- on Google Drive, I have authorized sharing with all users who have the link.

What should I correct?
Thanks in advance.

Hello Luc,

I don't have experience with Google Drive myself, but if you'd like to post the direct link to the image file then perhaps somebody will be able to spot what's wrong with it.
Best regards, Martin.

I downloaded the image from the Google Drive and used the Windows image viewer to save a resized version (96dpi and 500 wide...) and posted it on an accessible bit of my website..
You could also use the free Paint,NET program on windows, it is good for simple graphics manipulation.
Good luck.

Hi Iain,

Thanks a lot for your help. If I understand correctly, it is not enough to check that the image does not exceed 144 pixels, but it is also necessary to reduce the size below x*y values which is not mentioned in the instructions. Does anyone know these values?

Regards,

I just tried to post a very low resolution photo as a test and I still get the same error. I wonder if the problem is with Google Drive. Previously, there were three settings for sharing:
1) limited to certain people to set,
2) accessible to anyone who uses the link,
3) available to everyone.
This last option has disappeared.
I had an account on PhotoBucket which was closed when they decided to stop the free service. Do you have another host to recommend?

I tried adding inline images 640x 1280 and 640x2560 and these could all be included as inline images.
(Gave up doing more when the forum failed...)

Uh, I don't see how to introduce an inline image on our forum...

Hello Luc,

That link isn't actually a direct link to the image file itself, which is why the forum won't be able to read the file from that link -- instead it's a link that goes to a page that Google Drive appears to generate dynamically, which allows you to view the image on-screen (but not download it directly), and with a function button to download it dynamically. I could be wrong, but I imagine Google does that intentionally, specifically to prevent people linking directly to images they host. Unless they also provide some other separate means for you to get a direct link to the actual file, I suspect that unfortunately you won't be able to use Google Drive for embedding images (in this forum or anywhere else), and thus that you'd need to use a different image hosting service instead. (I don't have any recommendations for one myself, though -- sorry.)

However, I don't have experience myself with Google Drive, and it's possible they do have some additional functionality available to their users to allow images they host to be used in-line in other non-Google pages (such as a here) -- I don't know.
Best regards, Martin.

Thanks Martin, this confirms what I had assumed.
I am now hoping to get a suggestion for a hosting site, from someone who is used to such manipulations.

Perhaps worth noting that for the [img] tag that
- Images must be no wider than 640px
- The url for the image must be an image file, not a url which returns an image
- Images up to 640x2560 have worked but there is likely to be a max file size that is configured in the forum software

Indeed, it would be useful to know with more precision the maximum dimensions of the image to be displayed. In the meantime, I found the image host [urlservimg.com][/url] which is quite practical, because it asks for the resolution of the image to be stored, expressed in pixels, at each upload. So you just have to indicate 640 for our forum and it works. I could experiment it in two posts: https://forum.hauptwerk.com/viewtopic.php?%20f=1&t=20444 & https://forum.hauptwerk.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=20475#p154658.
