Connecting my Kawai ES8 to Hauptwerk

PostFri Mar 19, 2021 7:02 pm

I am trying to connect my Kawai ES8 electronic piano to Hauptwerk, using the USB Midi output.
It does not seem to connect and I am running out of ideas. Not sure what I am missing...

sorry, probably should have mentioned that I am trying to use my MacBook Pro and also a USB-C to USB Midi cable

Hi,

I had a look at your keyboard user manual and it should be fully compatible with Hauptwerk.

Make sure to connect your keyboard to the computer before starting Hauptwerk. Also check, once Hauptwerk running, in General setting | Midi Ports that your keyboard is visible (you should have 2 columns with check boxes, one labeled Hauptwerk VST Link and a second one you will probably be your keyboard (if you only have VST Link, then Hauptwerk doesn't 'see' your keyboard. Read your user manual to see if you need to set some parameters to activate by directional communication).

If you Hauptwerk see your keyboard, make sure to *tick* the box for Console MIDI IN 1 and your keyboard. Then load St-Anne organ, right-click on the lower manual of St-Anne then press and release the lowest key on your keyboard and highest key, then click 'DONE' (see the Hautpwerk Installation and User Guide page 45 to learn more )

Hope that helps
Best regards
François

Hi Francois,
it does not seem that Hauptwerk can see my electronic piano. I checked the settings and it does not tell me anything different. I even bought a MIDI USB converter, maybe my USBC does not work properly. No success....

You could connect your piano to a Windows computer via the converter to observe any MIDI output from the piano (when pressing keys).by installing MidiOx.

BTW, this Roland MIDI converter has been known to work well with Hauptwerk. Not saying others may not work.

Have you tried using a USB B to USB C cable attached to the USB B port on the back of the ES8? You may have done this but I'm not sure since you mentioned using a "midi" cable.

Make sure that your keyboard is not already assigned e.g. in Cubase. It can not be assigned twice.
I have exactly the same situation with my Studiologic Numa Nero.

If the Kawai has any drivers, you can try installing them. It would be helpful to know what version of Mac OS you have. If you’re hoping to get it to work as a class compliant midi device, you can try getting it detected using Garageband. Once it’s set up as a midi device Hauptwerk should be able to see it.

I bought this converter, but does not quite work. I must miss a step somewhere.

Hi
You’ve probably seen that on page 131 of the ES8 manual, that it should connect to a Windows or Mac computer using a USB cable and be supported by the operating system’s usb midi functionality. This is an alternative to using the midi five pin din connectors. (If you have a midi interface connected to the Mac’s USB port, then make sure you connect midi out from the keyboard to midi in on the midi interface.

With a Mac, you use Midi Monitor:
