Rodgers 745 MIDI

PostTue Oct 12, 2021 12:06 pm

Have an old Rodgers 745 at the church, and we are turning it into a Hauptwerk, using the original onboard MIDI. My question is this: the General pistons do not seem to produce any MIDI output according to MIDI-OX. The same is true for the stop tabs. All of the manual/pedal keys and the Divisional pistons do produce standard MIDI note on/off signals. All of the wiring inside the console appears intact. Is there something I'm missing to get the generals and stop tabs sending MIDI signals?

Some organs don’t produce stop tab or piston signals natively. For the stops, you could get two launch pads, but for the pistons, you may need to rewire them to work.

The Rodgers 745 did not come standard with MIDI. It was either a factory option or it was added later. If it was the factory option, it is likely that you need to select "Piston Mode" to get the pistons to send MIDI. By default, they do not.

In Rodgers MIDI V3 (which is likely much more recent than ours, but hopefully similar enough) the instructions to do this are:

To Select Piston Mode
1. Hold SET and turn the SELECT knob to the MIDI PISTON MODE menu item.
2. Release SET and turn the SELECT knob to choose ON or OFF for MIDI PISTON MODE.
3. Press General Cancel to return to the Transposer.
When PISTON MODE is enabled, Program Changes 1-12 on any Master Channel will activate the organ General Pistons of like number. Program Change 20 on any Master Channel will activate the organ's General Cancel piston. Program Changes 21-26 on any Master Channel will activate the divisional pistons for the division corresponding to that Master Channel.
Pressing a combination piston when PISTON MODE is enabled will cause the appropriate Program Change to be transmitted on a Master Channel. This feature can be used if you wish to use a sequencer without System Exclusive capability.
You can also use PISTON MODE to control the pistons of a second Rodgers console. To do this, enable PISTON MODE on each console, so that the Master console is sending Program Changes when pistons are pressed and the Slave console is receiving those Program Changes as piston commands.

I hope this helps. If it does not work, you can always contact Rodgers and ask them how to do this on your model.
