SSD Failure

PostTue Nov 16, 2021 2:56 pm

Eight years ago I built a Hauptwerk 4 computer for an organist friend. It has an SSD, but without warning the PC failed to start windows, and goes to DOS. DOS reports SSD failure. The motherboard works OK when booted from Ubuntu on a memory stick. Ubuntu also reports SSD failure. We have all the original installation discs and the Advanced User Dongle. If I get a new SSD or HDD and re install Windows, Hauptwerk, and the organs (Caen, Hereford and Thierach), will further steps be needed?

Hello kdt63,

Assuming you wanted to keep using Hauptwerk v4 (as opposed to upgrading to the current v6), the only things you'd need install are:

- Any drivers needed for your audio/MIDI interface and any other hardware you might have (e.g. touch-screens).

- The driver for the Hauptwerk v4 USB Key (HASP dongle): viewtopic.php?f=16&t=19710&p=147779#p147779

Note also that the Hauptwerk v4 software is no longer supported or available for download from MDA, so you'd need to have a saved/DVD copy of the v4.2.1 installer somewhere in order to be able to install v4. Likewise, not all sample set producers still have v4 versions of their sample sets available for download.

Alternatively, if you wanted to upgrade to the current version (v6.0.2) then you could download and install v6 directly -- there would be no need to install v4 or any v4 sample sets first. that case you would need to:

- Create an iLok account.
- Buy an iLok 2/3 dongle if you wished.
- Install iLok License Manager ( https://ilok.com/ ).
- Activate your v6 licence in iLok License Manager.
- Install the driver for the v4 USB Key as above.
- Download and install Hauptwerk v6 ( ( https://www.hauptwerk.com/win/ ) ).
- Launch Hauptwerk v6 and migrate your v4 sample set licences to v6.
- Activate the resulting licences in iLok License Manager.
- Download and install the v5+ versions of your sample sets from their makers, e.g. MDA/Paramount sample sets are here: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=17947 .

You may want to try reading the failed drive on another computer to see if you can recover the most recent Hauptwerk backup file. It would save you a whole lot of time not having to re-detect keyboards and stops etc, as well as all of your stored presets. The fact that the boot sector has failed doesn't necessarily mean that some data isn't recoverable.
There are several recovery utilities out there, many of which have free demo versions, which would enable you to test the feasibility of recovery.
Moving forward, I would suggest considering a simple mirrored RAID 1 setup, or alternatively install a spare drive to which you periodically do a complete clone, including boot sectors. The third option (which I use) is to make a complete system image every few months. That will allow you to restore everything - operating system, applications, and data files, in a one-step process.

Many thanks Martin and Ray for your helpful advice.

Ray, do you know of any free software for reading failed SSDs?

Keith.

I have used EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard. The free version will recover a limited number of files, but will at least prove the feasibility of recovery or not. If only the boot sector or operating system files are corrupted but the file allocation table remains intact, you may be able to see the file folders even without a recovery tool. Let us know your progress.
