Grand Symphonic Cavaillé-Coll

PostThu May 11, 2017 11:50 pm

Dear Hauptwerk users,

I am pleased to announce the release of a new extension prepared together with Thorsten Wege (thways). We have named it the "Grand Symphonic Cavaillé-Coll." This project was initially a private project for Thorsten, but because of the many positive reactions, we have decided to make it available publicly. You can hear a playlist of selections performed by Thorsten by clicking on this link.

The main motivation for this extension was to create a versatile French Romantic instrument. As a result, there are some duplicated ranks which one would not find on typical French Romantic organs. It is also possible to imitate the organ of St. Ouen, Rouen by choosing the appropriate stops. The mixture stops of Rouen have been reconstructed rank by rank using the original Cavaillé-Coll specifications. Two Contrebombardes 32’ ranks are available on the Pédale which can also be used simultaneously to simulate the characteristic Rouen rumble as closely as possible.

You can view a screen shot of the main stop jamb by clicking on this link.

We used Stephen Schaub's Metz Plus extension as a starting point for this project. Note that the Grand Symphonic Cavaillé-Coll is designed as a stereo sample-set (it is not a surround sample-set). It does require a relatively large number of sample-sets. You will need to have purchased all of the following sample-sets before you can use the extension:
1) Caen version 2.5 (Sonus Paradisi) - link
2) Metz (Milan Digital Audio) - link
3) Rotterdam Hoofdorgel (Sonus Paradisi) - link
4) 4-manual Caen extension (Custom Hauptwerk Organs) - link

The price for the extension is US $119. If you are interested in ordering it, please contact me using the following email address (where [at] and [dot] of course needs to be substituted with "@" and "." respectively):
customhworgans[at]gmail[dot]com

Kind regards,

Jake

Congratulations!

I think this a very successful "marriage" of different sets, and it really sounds like a cohesive instrument. I know how much work this takes - I did what I called a "Cavaille Clone" back in the days of HW1, and it took a LOT of tweaking.

One question - there was no mention of manual and pedal compass.... is there any chance this might be 61/32?

Also my congratulations on this very nice achievement!
Sounds really great!

Unfortunately I don't own the Metz sampleset (I'm very happy with the Caen and the 2 extensions), so I have to pass ...
I'm sure that there will be plenty of others who will enjoy this Grand Symphonic Cavaillé-Coll very much ;-)

Hi Jonathan and Marco,

Thanks for kind remarks! The sound you hear is thanks to Thorsten's voicing.

The organ range is 56/30.

Great musical and technical wizardry work ! I'm still in the beginning of this set's exploration, but the pleasure to play it is already huge. Quite a roaring powerful beast !

Hello Hauptwerkers,

Based on suggestions from people using the Grand Symphonic Cavaillé-Coll extension, Thorsten Wege and I have prepared an update (version 1.1). Thanks all for the feedback!

The update includes the following changes:
1) The sampled tremulant for the Voix humaine 8' has been added.
2) Key action noises, stop action noises, and blower noise have been added. Their volume is adjustable using the controls on the "Noise Volume" page.
3) Inclusion of the tremulant buttons in the combination system.

The update also includes an additional ODF which does not require the Rotterdam sample-set and so reduces the number of required sample-sets.

On a slightly different topic, an update for the Oakland Aeolian-Skinner will be released early next week. After that, finishing the Rotterdam extension is my next priority.

Kind regards,

Jake

Thanks

Hello adri,

What would be the specifications of this set without the Rotterdam part?

The stop list is identical. The only difference is that the chamades on the Positif and Récit are taken from the Dom Bedos demo set instead of the Rotterdam sample-set.

And the price of this Reduced ODF ?

Both versions are included when you purchase the extension. The price for the two ODFs is US $119.

Kind regards,

Jake

Do we need to order:

1. Stephen Schaub's Metz extension?

2. Caen extension?

Having just obtained this set, I want to give Jake a big thumbs up for this project. As usual the product is excellent and the price more than reasonable. This set gives the acoustic and reeds of a real cathedral setting.
