1893 Steere released

PostTue Aug 24, 2021 7:52 pm

We are proud to announce the release of the 1893 J.W. Steere organ in the First Baptist Church of Owatonna, Minnesota. It has a long and interesting history – the organ was installed with funds donated by the famous Pillsbury family, and has served the church for nearly 130 years. As part of the introductory sale, we're offering a free copy of the organ in Zhang Hall at the Concordia University Irvine, CA. - all for $89

Read all about the release here:

This is the 2nd in our series of historic American organs from the 1800s - more to come!

They are lovely. I was surprised that I liked the little Zhang Hall organ. It is very versatile.

I notice that the Swell Oboe begins at tenor F. Does the Bassoon provide the bottom notes? That was often done in this era.

The Steere is especially nostalgic for me, as I’ve played a number of similar late-19th century American organs; in fact my very first organ recital was on a 12-rank Johnson. I am deeply grateful to Jonathan and Evensong Music for making it possible to play organs of this type in Hauptwerk, and look forward to future offerings.

The demo with this Prelude of Jean Langlais sounds realy beautiful. This sample is certainly a good way to discover and play american composers of this time. Perhaps my next purchase.

Thanks, everyone!

It really is a gem of a little instrument. We’ll try to get some more demos out - with some music from the era, to show it where it shines best. I was surprised how well the Langlais worked, but it is music written for an harmonium or small organ, so that actually makes a lot of sense.
