Notre Dame de Metz Piston suggestions

PostSun Dec 26, 2021 11:54 pm

I’ve put some work into getting a scheme of Generals and Divisionals that work for me on this organ, so I thought I would share them. The basic thrust is that the generals set up a gradually increasing romantic chorus as they increase on all manuals. This could potentially also work for the Hauptwerk master crescendo. Stops are used in their romantic style, until the last combination, where all powerful stops are in! Then on the divisionals, I set up mostly Baroque types of combinations increasing in volume, with the first one or two being quiet stops for solo or accompaniment, with baroque solo voices in the middle, then baroque choruses at the top. Therefore, for Baroque pieces, you can register quite ably with the divisionals, for Romantic pieces register with the generals and crescendo, or use both for a mix. Of course, you can still hand register!

To get this to work, I generally always include the Combs on every division, so this wouldn’t be a typical French way of registering, but I think it is quite effective.

My organ has 6 divisionals for each manual, 10 generals, a set and a cancel. However, I use the last two generals to switch between Manual II and III on the top manual, and I use the 6th pedal divisional as Hand Reg. So here is my setup:

(All divisionals include Combs. for that division)

Thanks for sharing your ideas. I've only ever set up this organ with strictly 19th century French symphonic registration practices, and that's the only type of music I play on it. I guess I'm guilty of "thinking inside the box"!

Thanks! I think its actually quite a versatile organ, and have been quite enjoying it. Since I first posted I made a few more tweaks, mostly in the pistons to add a primary chorus on each division, and on the generals I removed the Great 16' bourdon from some registrations because it was clashing with the pedal. Otherwise enjoying these settings quite a bit.

Some favourite divisional registrations:
Recit 5, GO 3, Pedale 1, play melody on Recit, accompaniment on the GO. - Good reed solo texture

GO 4, Pedale 1 - Good first verse for hymns
GO 5, Pedale 5 - Good powerful verse for hymns/last verse, or say for a toccata. If the pedal is too powerful, sometimes I couple the Basson 16 on the Recit to the Pedale instead of the Bombarde 16 that is present in the Pedale.

GO 1, Recit 4, Pedale 1 - Soft verse of a quite hymn on the GO, fits well with a solo played on the recit accompanied on the GO.

Positif 1 or Recit 1 for soft hymns or reflective music with Pedale 1

GO 4, Recit 5, Pedale 3 - Plenum on the Great, reed solo on the Recit, fitting pedal line on the Pedale

Recit 4, GO 2, Pedale 1 - Good "Oboe" solo with accompaniment on great and pedal.

Positif 2, GO 1, Pedale 1 - Relatively soft Baroque solo voice on the Positif, with appropriate accompaniment on the GO and pedale (Just the flute Harmonique on the GO works too).

Positif 5, GO 1 or 3, Pedale 1 - Good Cornet Decomposé solo on the Positif.

Immensely valuable, thank you! I am only familiar with the basics of French literature so this is very helpful to me!
