Big Sur on an iPad Pro and an intel Mac Mini with Duet

PostFri Feb 12, 2021 10:41 pm

Is anyone using Big Sur on an iPad and a Mac Mini with Duet? Have you had problems getting them all to work together? Any solutions? Maybe backtrack to Catalina?

I believe sidecar requires a primary monitor, right? I am using the iPad as my primary monitor for the mac mini, and it will not function unless the the mac mini has been turned on already (using my TV as a primary monitor). Once connected, the iPad will not use its own full screen, but scrunches up the TV's screen to where it is practically unusable. Highly impractical for Hauptwerk sample sets!

I think Sidecar is more flexible in Big Sur. Now you can either mirror your display, or use it as a separate display, which would be more appropriate for your needs. Check out this article:

Big Sur introduced a lot of app incompatibilities that software makers have been slow to sort out, so this may be your only hope until the makers of Duet start supporting big sur. Another option is to look into Luna Display. It appears to be Big Sur compatible, and lets you have an iPad as a primary monitor.

Sidecar, at least in Catalina, does not let you use the touchscreen capabilities of your mobile device - only an Apple Pencil. I see nothing in the Apple documentation that leads me to believe this is not also the case in Big Sur. Hence, if the desire is to use an iPad as a touchscreen for the Hauptwerk, Sidecar probably will not work.

However, since you already have the Mac and iPad, you can try this for yourself. This will only take a few minutes.

Thanks to everyone who replied. After working with a particularly diligent Apple Support specialist who would not let go without a solution, we discovered the problem in a security setting. And, yes, Les, you are quite right, that only the pencil works in sidecar. Which made the iPad useless for my purposes anyway. As for Duet Display, I'm not going back there. After a week of troubleshooting with their support, we still could not get it to work. So I returned the iPad.

Well, at least that keeps my equipment down to only one machine -- my MacBook Pro. And I have all those pistons and rocker tabs on my stack to use for convenience someday when I sit down and figure out how to program combinations. :( Right now I'm spending my time/effort learning to play with my feet and enjoying the organ instead of sweating over it. My latest find on YouTube has been Rachmaninoff's Prelude in G Minor performed with the Caen sample set, and I actually found and purchased the sheet music, too! Loving it!!! :D
