Laptop

PostSat Feb 13, 2021 11:47 am

Unfortunately I lost my job right before Christmas, my laptop died in Jan. My 2tb win7 ssd is ok thankfully.

I've been looking online for a Laptop, but its hard trying to find one with all the stuff I want. I want 4 USB hopefully, dedicated graphics, at least i7, 32gb ram or more, and a 17 inch screen. I was thinking about using my ssd with win 7 instead of win10? Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jake

The hardest thing may be to find one with 4 USB ports. However, getting a good quality powered USB hub can help to offset this if you can't find one with enough. There are a fair number of i7, 32GB, 17 inch screen laptops available, if size isn't a problem. I would go for Windows 10, and transferring all your sample sets, etc. to the new hard drive. It's more work now, but that will save you from more compatibility problems and headaches down the line.

If your intention is to use your existing SSD with Win7 as the boot drive in your new computer, it is not a trivial process. Windows will recognize that the hardware environment has changed, and set about installing new drivers. It may also require you to re-authorize Windows. This link provides some useful information:

I agree with larason2 that a fresh installation with Windows 10 is a better long term solution. This is especially true if you are going to use the laptop for other purposes requiring internet connectivity, because you will want the latest security updates.
