It is possible to flip an organ between mixer presets to compare sounds, but you have to create mixer bus groups that have the same bus group number for both presets. Then the organ's rank routing stays the same, and the only changes are in the mixer.

The best way I can come up with so far is to make audio groups defined by their sources -- which types of ranks route to the group -- rather than the destination outputs. So the groups might be distinguished by factors such as:

main/front/diffuse vs surround/rear/distant ranks
ranks that need IR added vs those that don't
low pitched, heavy ranks vs lighter and upperwork ranks
ranks routed by division if desired

Once you come up with a generic scheme for groups that allows you to route ranks by your own criteria, then you set the same bus groups on each preset and point the groups to different outputs in each preset.

This would be more complicated for your experimentation than for me, but bus groups are easy to set up and reroute, as long as you plan a consistent scheme for your needs. Better than changing the rank routing, in my opinion.

Using my examples above, the number of groups might be as high as:

main/surround x IR/none x low-heavy/middle/high x pedal/choir/great/swell/solo/antiphonal
= 2 x 2 x 3 x 6
= 72 groups

But unused groups do no harm, and can point to overlapping outputs or none.

Hello Drew,

Yes -- I confirm Mark's reply (i.e. if you keep the group numbers to which you're routing ranks constant between two presets, then it's easy simply to change the organ's selected mixer preset to compare the effects of the presets).

If you did instead prefer to use one of the alternate configurations (e.g. if your planned alternate routing was radically different, such as routing ranks amongst a different number of groups), then within the backup/restore wizard's 'advanced' mode you may potentially need to restore both the the general settings and the organ settings, especially if you wanted MIDI settings to be copied across, since some relevant settings are general (not organ-level), such as the MIDI devices and audio device channels. However, once you'd copied all of the settings (general + organ) across to the alternate configuration, you could of course then change (or reset to defaults) any of the audio/routing settings within that alternate configuration. The 'General settings | General configuration wizard' and 'Organ settings | Organ configuration wizard' have options for resetting audio/routing settings (at the general and organ levels, respectively).
Best regards, Martin.

If you happen to be around Indianapolis on the 11th of December, join us at Greenwood UMC for a special "Hauptwerk Christmas" concert @ 4pm.

Sample sets used will include:

Caen Cavaille-Coll
Freiberg Silberman
Portland Reuter Op. 227
Pasadena Presbyterian Æolian-Skinner
Paramount 341
Maybe some more....

The organ was recently updated from v4 to v6, and all sample sets have been updated as well, with superb results! The new setup is even better than it has ever been.

I’m case you missed the live stream, it can be found here:

The program was great fun - everything from Bach to Laurel and Hardy! It’s amazing what Hauptwerk affords us!

The audio level was recorded a tad bit low. So, if you have a good stereo or headphone amp, you might want to use it. I will try to cut the video up into individual tracks in a few days.

Merry Christmas from all of us at Greenwood UMC.

Congratulations on a fantastic concert.

The introduction from your pastor mentioning his first organ concert, and the audience poll with 50% fitting that camp - just brilliant! And what an entertaining and engaging program.

The organ sounds magnificent - would love to make it up to visit you at some point.

Merry Christmas from Portsmouth, OH!
