New Sample Set - St. Davids Cathedral, Wales

Post by ivanbarritt »

Hello All!

I've released a new sample set - The organ of St. Davids Cathedral in Wales. It comprises of 54-stops, 4-manuals and was built by Harrison & Harrison in 2000. The Sample Set is available in 4 Channels with real tremulant samples for every rank. There is also a free demo version that you can download which has a limited amount of stops. I hope you enjoy this new sample set!

I really love receiving this message after spending $500!

At least it's getting sales! Good. He can always move to a different file service after learning how this goes.

I tried the trial version of this organ and was impressed with the “feel” and sound of the product and decided to buy it.

The purchase was straightforward. I received a link to download the instrument and an email confirming the details. I downloaded the sample set (19.6GB) from Google drive and installed the file on to my Hauptwerk system. No problem with the download, it took about 40 minutes The sample set does not use ilok.

I’ve played the full sample set for about an hour and am really enjoying it. The sound is excellent: choruses are clear and bright, and there is warmth in the sound of the softer 8ft stops. Lots of possibilities for solo lines, and the mixtures don’t scream out. The sampled tremulant ranks are a real advantage.

The Tuba is huge, I’m going to tame it down a little. The pedal reeds are also a bit too loud (for my liking). In Recordings I have of the organ, the big reeds seem to better balance the other divisions, and with Hauptwerk I can adjust them to my taste.

The pedal organ lacks a very soft 16, I’m sure this is probably the same on the real instrument. Coupling down one of the soft manual 16ft stops can mitigate for this. It will take me a while to get used to the two choir divisions.

The sample set includes a combination system (pistons) which provides the facilities from the real organ and so includes the Grt and Pedal combinations coupled. It mapped to my console very easily, it was almost an exact match. The combination system does not replicate the organ’s stepper system, but uses the native Hauptwerk registration stepper.

The console screens are very clear and easy to use, just, I suspect, like the real organ. The simplified screen is clear and includes expression pedal indicators.

This is an excellent sample set of a great Harrison & Harrison / Henry Willis organ.

Highly recommend!

On the negative side, no documentation is provided about installing the instrument. The webpage does not say that the combination system is included with the organ and does not make it clear that an iLOK is not needed. Small points easily addressed and should not distract from an outstanding sample set.

Thank you Ivan. What’s next?

No, what it's getting is a lot of FREE demo downloads so that purchasers (did I mention $500?) can't access.
Something that should have been thought about first.
Not happy.

Hi Steve, thank you for bringing this up. I'm going to move the demo download to a different server so hopefully the main download link doesn't get overwhelmed. I'm sorry about this and I'm fixing this issue as soon as I can!

Hi Iain, thank you for your comments. I will be providing documentation shortly as a PDF which can be download directly from the St. Davids webpage soon.

Thanks, that will be great.
Whilst online presentations and YouTube videos are good, but not everyone likes learning about “stuff” only that way. Written documentation which can be read offline still has a place, for at least some of us.

The demos sound quite nice. The Bach in particular sounded pretty convincing, probably thanks to Father Willis. Personally I'd rather have a second choir division than a solo or a fernwerk. However I'm very happy with the Peterborough Hill and I'm not as much of a Willis fan. But will the purists consider this a proper cathedral organ? It sounds well put together anyway.
