Which speakers small room - 6.5m2

Post by hmvanginkel »

Good day,

Because I now have a much smaller room for my HW organ, I am looking for other speakers. The previous room was a lot larger and I had two Adam A7X + Sub12. For my new room of 6.5 m2 it really stood out, and I found the Adams quite aggressive.

Because space is limited for the setup, I am looking for speakers with the bass port at the front and maximum width of 23 centimeters.
I now have a few speakers on my shortlist:
* Focal Alpha 50 Evo
* Kali Audio LP-6 2nd Wave
* Kali Audio IN-5
* IK iLoud MTM MKII
* PreSonus Eris Studio 5.

Without Sub for the time being, because I first want to see what these speakers bring.
Do you have any tips regarding choice, or do you have any other suggestions?
All tips, suggestions and advice are very helpfull.

Kind regards,
Henk

I wonder if some of the aggressiveness is because of putting too much volume and complexity through one pair of speakers. My room is only 5.4 m cubed, so has smaller floor space than yours with two stories open to the ceiling, although there are open extensions

I divide the audio load across 24 speakers, mostly Adam, and a sub, and a console noise pair. I usually using "Dynamic: cyclic within group" for pipe allocation. None of the speakers work hard, and the sound is very clean and easy on my ears (which are annoyingly sensitive). Amps are at 1/4 to 1/3 gain depending on the speaker model and distance. Maybe trying a few speaker pairs turned down lower would be better?

Why not the Adam T5V?

Thanks.
I definitely considered the Adam T5V, but it has the bass reflex port on the back. Then I leave about 7 centimeters of space to the wall behind the speaker. I think that's not enough space. That's why I looked for a speaker with the reflex bass port on the front.

Height of my room is 2.35 meters. Not enough space for 24 speakers. :wink:
What type of Adam speakers do you have?

I have 4 A8X, 2 T8V, 6 T7V in a front manuals group. 4 KRK RP10 G4 in a front pedals group. 6 A3X in a rear 8' and up group. 2 RP10 G2 in a rear 32 - 16' group. 1 SVS PC12 Plus sub. 2 A3X behind music stand in a console noises group.

My T8V and T7V are less than 3" from the wall. LF switches set to -2 dB and it works well.

It all worked fine when I had 8 front and 4 rear speakers. No need to go crazy, but I did...

I, too, have a small room (about 3x4m) and use 4 Adam AV7 speakers (2 front on the console, 2 rear high on book cabinets), and 1 Sub 10mk2 on the floor. The room is fairly alive acoustically, perhaps too much. The front speakers are about 10" from the wall behind them. Initially I had the two front speakers turned inward toward me as is recommended for most monitor type speakers, but the sound was always too bright, almost harsh with mixtures. I thought about re-voicing the offending stops, but eventually I found that I just needed to turn the front speakers so that they faced directly ahead rather than toward me and that has resulted in a much more pleasing sound overall. For me, part of the lesson is to simply arrange whatever speakers you have for the most pleasing sound, not to always follow the "rules" for placement. As a cellist friend once remarked, "In the end, it's all about the sound."

Right, none of my speakers are aimed directly at me.

I've been using two Alpha 65 (not 50) Evo speakers. They sit at either end of the console table and point forwards. I've been very happy with the sound. The room is not small but I sit with my back perhaps six feet from one of the end walls. More than half the room is carpeted; the entire ceiling of the room has some form of probably sound absorbing tiles.
