Zion Lutheran Organ Dedication Service

PostWed Nov 28, 2007 1:57 am

The Organ at Zion Lutheran Church was dedicated on Sunday, November 25th, 2007.
For the service there was choir, brass quintet, and organ music (of course).

As many of you know the organ is fully Hauptwerk (except the tubular bell chimes).

The sampleset is a custom odf - designed in HW1 format, then imported, then "tweeked" - a compilation of various dry (and a few not so dry) pipe samples.

There are 14 channels of audio into 18 channels of amplification.
The audio interface is an EMU-1810 with 8 more channels via the Behringer ADA8000 rack mounted DAC.

2 channels, bi-amped - 32' stops and reeds in the pedal
2 channels - 16' and 8' flues in the pedal
2 channels, bi-amped - 16' 8' 4' principals and reeds, Cornet V
2 channels - upper pipe speakers - 8' flutes and reeds
2 channels - choir pipe speakers - 8' flutes and strings
2 channels - 6X9 Infinity tri-axial pairs - 4' thru 2' pitch
2 channels - 6-1/2" coaxial - mixtures, 1-1/3', 1-3/5' mutations and 1' flutes

All audio output is mono, left-right, C/C#, octaves and ranks cycled (except Pedal_1 where < 392Hz is summed to mono to ensure there is enough power to handle the low end of the 32' Principal and 16' Subbass.

The stops control screen is designed to be split for right and left jams, but I did not have time to get the second touch screen mounted and installed yet.

The console shell and pedalboard is the original Conn Classic model 825 (1964). The pedalboard has been converted to midi with reed switches and magnets using a 40 scanpoint midi board by MidiBoutique.com
Pedalboard = channel 5

The manuals are from a Gulbransen Rialto II - single contact per key, common bus - wired to the MidiBoutique.com HWCE midi package with 3 keymux64 cards. The manuals are mounted in a custom made stack with the original organ's piston rails.
Great = channel 1
Swell = channel 2
Stops, couplers, pistons = channel 3
channel 4 is reserved for a future solo manual.

13 new toe studs were added.

The computer, audio, DAC, active crossovers, and amplifiers are rack mounted in a room roughly 7' X 16' with 9-12 foot ceiling. The room is semi-sealed and serves as an infinite baffle. The equipment rack is about 25 feet from the console.

The computer runs 24/7 and is plugged into an APC Smart-UPS1400 (rackmount). The amplifiers are switched on from the console with a dual 25 amp contact relay. The same switch (under the keybed) turns on the touch screen(s) and bell chimes. The organ is always loaded and ready.

These pictures give you an idea of the size of the organ gallery. Those are 18" full range drivers for the Pedal_1 audio output group. Together with a pair of 12" subwoofers, they are all firing together in mono to handle the 16Hz - 392Hz range.

The high frequencies for Pedal_1 (and also for the Mains) are handled by the Bose 402 speaker arrays (four 4-1/2" full range drivers per array).

I would like to thank the following people who have been "instrumental" (pun intended) in helping to build this glorious virtual pipe organ.

Martin Dyde, for all his help and support, and assistance in preparing the pipe samples - but mostly for making all this possible.

My associate Milton Snyder, who put in countless hours doing anything I asked of him - from soldering contacts and speaker connections, to fishing cabling under the choir loft floor, to holding notes so I could take dB readings.

James Pressler, for providing wonderful midi files which proved to be invaluable in process of tonal design and the final voicing.

Colin Pykett, who's published works and private correspondence mentored me along the path from pipe organ ignoramous to "rank" amatuer organ builder.

Sample set providers - Brett Milan, Yves Petit-Clerc, Jonathan Orwig, Jiri Zurek, Nicholas Appleton

Congratulations, Bob, on an impressive installation of Hauptwerk! May the Lord our God be pleased with the many offerings of music and hymns from Zion Congregation, now and in the future.

Soli Deo Gloria
