In short words: Current Windows Operating systems can manage at least 4 GB of physical RAM, but as a standard, only 2 GB of the total memory will be allocated for applications - the operating system itself will claim the balance. With the /3GB switch in the boot.ini file, you can advice your Windows system to free up to 3 GB of RAM for applications. But applications that want to use the extended memory need to be programmend in the way described by Microsoft...
