Skinner Hauptwerk Switch

PostTue Nov 16, 2004 2:03 am

Dear Hauptwerkians,
Sitting pretty (or so I thought) with 1,792 MB Ram, I read Jim Reid's (and others) ramifications on memory with an unconcerned interest. But now it seems the bar has been raised, and I am forced to ask the question; what is the 3GB switch? it sounds like a card trick. Where do I register my Ram? and are they even allowed within city limits?
Okay, can someone answer at least the first question? Please and Thanks

G'Day,

complete information about the /3GB switch can be found at that link: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/pl ... AEmem.mspx

In short words: Current Windows Operating systems can manage at least 4 GB of physical RAM, but as a standard, only 2 GB of the total memory will be allocated for applications - the operating system itself will claim the balance. With the /3GB switch in the boot.ini file, you can advice your Windows system to free up to 3 GB of RAM for applications. But applications that want to use the extended memory need to be programmend in the way described by Microsoft...
Cheers

Registered means that such RAM chips have an additional input buffer which keeps the charging currents low for the PC when data are transferred into it. They are more expensive than unbuffered ones.
It´s a virtue to be well-tempered.

For the 3GB switch a registered (=buffered) memory is not required, this

should be O.K., right ?

From what I've seen while trying to make a decision on an interim mobo, the use of buffered or unbuffered memory is dependent on the specific motherboard itself.

Here's the mobo/processor combo I'm looking at right now: http://www.oneclickpc.com/compatibility.aspx?product_ID=22.

It uses unbuffered RAM and will also accomodate my present slower RAM (PC 2100) until I can purchase the faster PC3200 RAM.

I am still confused as to whether I will be able to use 3 GB with HW 1.22! And has anyone actually made Hauptwerk work on two coordinated computers? The ASUS mobo I'm enamoured of would be a prime candidate for such a project.

Hauptwerk v1.22 is not compatible with the Windows XP/2000/2003 Pro/Server /3GB switch, and so is limited to sample sets of 2 GB. I have made a v1.23 which does work with the /3 GB switch, which will be released shortly.

Thank you, Martin. That should hold me for a while.
