Using reverb for dry sets in MAC computers.

Post by laurentiui »

Finally a simple solution to add reverb for Mac users.
1. Open Au Lab.
2. Create a new document.
3. Go to Edit: Add Audio unit Instrument.
4. Select: Hauptwerk from Milan Digital Menu. (This create link to Hauptwerk that must have selected to audio outputs Hauptwerk AU VST Link.)
5. Select Effects from dropbox menu that appear to the new instrument created.
6. Select Apple AU Matrix Reverb, or Altiverb, or any Reverb VST Plugin that you have. (Pristine space from Voxengo can load IR convolution files).
7. Enjoy playing a dry set with reverb.

Thank you very much! I have been following discussions on reverb... installing all kinds of trial versions and plugins... sometimes too complicated, other times not convincing. I was looking for Reverb for Dummies, but now I realize that Apple had already provided without me knowing :-)

The AU Lab was installed in seconds, linked Hauptwerk and my Profire, and it was working... the AUMatrixReverb has a default setting that sounded very convincing right out of the box... This does the trick for me (at least for now).

Thanks for pointing this out...!

I have used AU Lab for years. It solves a host of interesting problems - making lots of audio things very easy on a Mac. Reverb (and other effects) is a good example. I also use AU Lab to combine the output of Hauptwerk and SoftSynths. In this way, I have been very successful substituting higher-end digital pianos for use with theater organ sample sets.

Any recommendations for free reverb VST plugins that can be used on the Mac?

I'm impressed with AU Lab and the AU Matrix Reverb, but would like to experiment with others that can be used with AU Lab

Thanks

Hello Billl,

As VST Reverbers I recommend:

1. OldSchoolVerb from Voxengo (It's free and have some interesting reverberating spaces).
2. Ambience (free demo that works without limitations). http://www.vst4free.com/free_vst.php?id=568

Here you have the first 5 VST convolution plugins.

The best that I found are the following: (there are not free, they are very expensive, but you can try the demo).

1. Altiverb
2. Voxexngo Pristine spaces
The both allow you to load some IR models. (wave files).

Thanks Laurentiui - I will check those out.

It appears Au Lab is restricted to stereo, as my rear speakers have no output with this Au/vst audio output setup. Is that the case or do I have to change other settings?

Best regards,
Bill

FYI, the MOTU UltraLite mk3 has built-in reverb for all of it's channels. Very easy to setup using CueMix which is part of the software package. Best to get the Hybrid version in most cases.

To quote from the MOTU marketing dept:
Hybrid FireWire/USB2 connectivity connect to your computer via either bus-powered FireWire or hi-speed USB2.CueMix FX flexible 10 input/14 bus mixer with on-board DSP effects, including reverb with sends/returns, plus EQ and compression on every input and output.10 inputs/14 outputs there's no channel sharing in the UltraLite-mk3 Hybrid; the mic inputs, S/PDIF I/O, headphone out and main outs are all handled as separate channels.Classic Reverb provides five different room types, three frequency bands. Apply hardware DSP-driven effects processing to inputs, outputs, and busses independent of your host computer. Add Classic Reverb™ with lengths up to 60 seconds. Further sculpt your sound with 7-band parametric EQ featuring filter types carefully modeled after British analog console EQs. Choose between two forms of compression: a conventional compressor and the Leveler™, an accurate model of the legendary LA-2A™ optical compressor that provides vintage, musical automatic gain control.
