Stan's Music Parlor Organ Demonstration and Open Bench! (Music at 8 pm.)
Fri, Jul 14, 2023, 7:30 PM

Dr. Harris describes the organ's development from its original 1998 installation as a digital Johannus Sweelinck 30, to the addition of the BachMen/Rosales pipe organ and more than 150 Hauptwerk virtual pipe organs.

Music representing 16th through 21st century compositions and international styles displays the organ's vast tonal resources.

Following the organ's demonstration, audience keyboard musicians will be invited to play some favorite music on various combinations of the organ's digital, pipe and virtual instruments!

Prolific French composer Couperin spent the end of his life as court organist at the Palace of Versailles. Early in life, Beethoven auditioned as church organist in Bonn. His organ compositions reflect a young man’s experimentations with the new Romantic key changes and harmonies. Better known for orchestral works, Bruckner’s few organ pieces deserve a hearing. Nyquist taught organ at the University of Santa Clara. Piontek lives in Boise, ID. He composed his Air at 12 years old, on a day when his dad ridiculed him for aspiring to a career in church music. He went over to his church, and this Air was the result. Purcell’s seldom heard Fanfare sounds out the joyous and elegant.
Nelson’s Flourish just seemed the right thing to open the second half tonight. It would make a grand wedding march. Elmore taught composition at Curtis in Philadelphia. Many West Coast organists studied with him. Fedak’s two chorale preludes provide a very unusual, beautiful take on two well-known hymn tunes. He set Beecher in 5/4 meter. Walther composed many Baroque chorale preludes in the German tradition. Mendelssohn provides a very sweet Romantic slow movement Adagio. Mader taught at Occidental College. McCabe’s trumpet ventures make wonderful church postludes. Peeters’ Toccata--rarely heard, seems a dramatic, regal curtain drop tonight.

Thomas Mellan is an organist, keyboardist, harpischordist, guitarist pianist, producer and composer based in Los Angeles. In 2012, he played his first recital at Eglise St. Eustache in Paris. He's the creator behind the darksynth project Decapital.

He plays harpsichord and keys in Delirium Musicum, the dynamic and cutting edge conductor-less ensemble from Los Angeles. He appears on Delirium’s debut album “Seasons”, released in 2023 by Warner Classics and produced by Fred Vogler.

Dr. Les Deutsch plays his virtual recreation of Franck's Basilica organ!
Music starts at 8 pm and can be seen on Facebook LIVE: https://www.facebook.com/StansMusicParlor90019
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/dr-les-deu ... 3003415717

BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Les Deutsch may be best known as a NASA mathematician – but he retired from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in December, 2022. Since then, he has had to fall back on his other career as a musician and composer. Les has been the Caltech Organist since 1974, so this is his 50th anniversary. He has performed at Stan’s Music Parlor in the past as both a concert organist and a theater organist. This time around, his concert will focus on “musical projects I have accomplished since my retirement.”

PROGRAM
Among other things, you will hear some new arrangements and a new composition for organ. You will hear some chorale preludes by Marcel Dupré – samples of the recent recordings Les made of the entire series of 79 chorales. You will hear all of this played on an organ Les designed as a recreation of the Cavaillé-Coll instrument built for the Basilica of Saint Clotilde in Paris, France, as it existed during the tenure of organist César Franck.

BIOGRAPHY

Hektor Pitstick began to learn the piano at age three from his father, Rodrik Pitstick. Working through the tears and initially loathing the instrument, he was forced to continue into formal lessons from Ms. Judy O’Dell. In middle-school he switched instructors to Mr. Joe May, who put him on the path towards loving music and the piano. After Mr. May relocated from Great Falls to Helena, Hektor was left instructor-less for nearly a year. During this year, rather than quitting, he tried to progress on his own, tackling some of Rachmaninoff’s works. After this, Ms. Su Suits took the reins and pushed him into invoking his visceral, rabid love for expression. Being unsatisfied with the piano alone, he pursued the organ. Exhilarated at finding an instrument versatile enough for his schemes, he went on to study Organ Performance, initially at the University of Montana, and is currently a Junior at Concordia University Irvine. In 2022, he toured Germany and England with the University of Montana Chamber Chorale as their accompanist. He has served as accompanist for many organisations, including the Missoula Community Children’s Choruses, The Mendelssohn Club of Missoula, and over ten parishes to date. Currently, he is an Organ Scholar and Music Intern for Christ Cathedral. When he is not in the practice room, he enjoys skiing, swimming, reading, traveling, and attending concerts.

Dr. Harris describes the organ's development from its original 1998 installation as a digital Johannus Sweelinck 30, to the addition of the BachMen/Rosales pipe organ and more than 150 Hauptwerk virtual pipe organs. Live and pre sequenced music representing 16th through 21st century compositions and international styles displays the organ's vast tonal resources.

The nineteenth century Bell & Co. pump organ still sings, and will be demonstrated with music composed for it, as well.

F ollowing these demonstrations, audience keyboard musicians will be invited to play some favorite music on various combinations of the organ's digital, pipe and virtual instruments, the piano, and the harmonium!

BIOGRAPHY

Stan began violin lessons at age 3 with Grace Nicola in Columbus, Ohio; commenced public performances at age 4; and by age 11, won First and Grand Prizes at the Columbus and Worthington SDA Church talent shows. He began studying piano at age 9 and organ at age 13. As a Mount Vernon Academy student, he served as Chapel Organist, string teacher, soloist, and chamber musician, and graduated as Valedictorian. He won a music scholarship to Andrews University in Michigan and earned a BA with Honors in organ and violin by studying with Drs. C. Warren Becker and Leroy Peterson.

Stan served as an assistant organist at the Eastwood Seventh-day Adventist Church and a Baptist Church in Columbus, OH; at the University Seventh-day Adventist Church in Loma Linda, CA; and at the Second Church of Christ, Scientist of Los Angeles. He played violin and viola as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician. In 1988, a left hand injury ended his professional music performance career. He has continued to play some keyboard music for private occasions, and churches, including 6 organ recitals at the Los Angeles Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels.

For 49 years, Stan has hosted "Stan’s Music Parlor", a private chamber music series for musicians to share music with friends and family. More than 250 musicians have participated. About 1000 guests each year enjoy music and receptions with the musicians.

The American Psychiatric Association granted Stanley Harris, MD, Distinguished Life Fellowship, its highest honor. Dr. Harris retired in 2021 after 36 years as University Psychiatrist and Clinical Professor at the University of Southern California where he continues voluntary service as an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Psychiatry.

Bell & Co. Harmonium

In the late 1900's, pump organs were popular in American homes and churches. The organist pumps a wind supply to sound tuned brass reeds.

1984 Steinway B Parlor Grand Piano with PianoDisc

The walnut B case is a popular size for parlor and smaller concert halls. PianoDisc records and plays back music with a full ranges of expressive sensitivity.

In 1998, a Johannus Sweelinck-30 3 manual, 58 voice, 77 “rank” digital organ from Holland was installed in the Music Parlor. The organ simulates two styles of pipe organs--18th century baroque and 19th century romantic.

A Toshiba Tecra 730XCDT notebook computer with Johannus Intonat software creates more styles of Johannus organs. Cubase and Cakewalk software record and play midi sequences to create “player organ” performances.

A Johannus Classic Sound Module CSM-128 adds 48 sampled orchestral and organ voices, and a Roland JV-1010 Synthesizer Module generates more than 1000 additional sounds. Johannus Digital Stereo Acoustic DSA-4 adds acoustic effects to the Music Parlor.

In 2010, Rosales Organ Builders redesigned and installed a 2 rank (8' Gedeckt and 4' Principal) 1984 BachMen OrganCrafters pipe organ. Artisan Instruments built a computerized midi interface between the console and pipework that enables an organist to play up to 30 stops. Manuel Rosales voiced and tuned the 144 pipes.

The Johannus organ console connects via an M-Audio 410 Firewire midi/audio interface to Hauptwerk virtual pipe organ and Native Instruments Kontakt Player 7 software that uses an HP Pavilion Elite i7, 24 GB RAM computer with over 150 sample sets of virtual pipe organs and keyboard instruments on its 7.5 TB hard drives.

Organists select a Hauptwerk or Native Instruments virtual instrument, a Johannus digital organ, a Roland sound, and/or the BachMen/Rosales pipe organ to play independently or in combination.

The organ's audio system includes 22 amplifiers, 8 sub-woofers, and over 100 music parlor, dining room, and stairwell speakers to create music in various acoustic environments. Johannus and Hauptwerk organs use 16 channels for 3D divisional audio imaging, and 4 channels each for surround acoustic enhancement.
